Free Safety Test Kit for Schools and Youth Programs

Teens often prepare for their first boating card, hunter education course, first aid class or learner's permit. This kit shows how adult leaders can use free PassEveryTest practice in a class, camp session or troop meeting. It includes a 50-minute session plan, a handout for teens and parents and answers to common questions.

For: High school teachers, youth program leaders, camp staff and scout leaders working with teens

Using PassEveryTest with teens

PassEveryTest is a free practice site with no account and no sign-up. It is independent and not affiliated with any government or certifying body. It is paid for by ads, and it is a general study site that is not directed at children under 13, so it is best used by teens with an adult leader.

  • Practice sets with an explanation after every answer.
  • Study guides written from official handbooks.
  • Print this set for paper worksheets with an answer key, so no devices are needed.
  • Listen mode, which reads questions aloud for learners who find reading hard.
  • A study planner and mistake notebook that stay on each teen's own device.

Check your school or organization's rules on websites with ads before you use any site in a session. Printed sets are an easy option when devices are not allowed.

Boating safety

In Canada, everyone who operates a power-driven boat needs proof of competency, and the Pleasure Craft Operator Card is earned by passing an accredited boating safety test. In California, all operators of motorized vessels need a California Boater Card, regardless of age, with a few exceptions.

Hunter education

Hunter education courses teach safety, ethics and the law. In California, for example, hunter education is required for people who have never held a California hunting licence, the online course and follow-up class are designed for students 12 and older, and students under 18 need a signed parent or guardian consent form. Practice tests cover knowledge only. Safe handling skills are taught in the official course.

First aid knowledge

First aid practice tests help teens learn the steps for common emergencies before or after a hands-on course. They do not give a first aid certificate, and they cannot replace practising skills such as CPR with a qualified instructor.

Driving readiness

Many teens study for a learner's permit while still in school. In Ontario you must be at least 16 and pass a knowledge test on the rules of the road and traffic signs to get a G1. In New South Wales you can apply for a learner licence from 16, after passing the Driver Knowledge Test.

Ideas for classes, camps and troop meetings

  • Quiz stations: set up printed sets on boating, first aid and road signs, and have small groups rotate every ten minutes.
  • Team challenge: two teams answer a practice set on the screen, and each team must explain the rule to score.
  • Before a trip: run a boating or first aid set the week before a canoe trip or camp-out.
  • Take-home: send the handout home so teens can practise with a parent.
  • Listen mode: play questions aloud so everyone can follow, including teens who find reading hard.

Check the official requirements for any badge, award or credit your group is working toward. Practice on PassEveryTest is not part of any official badge or award program.
