PassEveryTest

Free Resource Kit for Driving Schools and Instructors

Most new drivers must pass a knowledge or theory test before they can drive with a supervisor. This kit shows how to use free PassEveryTest practice tests, study guides and scenario sets in your classroom or at the kitchen table. It includes a 60-minute lesson plan, a printable handout for learners and answers to common questions.

For: Driving schools, driver education teachers and parents teaching a new driver

How to use PassEveryTest with learners

PassEveryTest is a free practice site. Learners do not need an account or sign-up, and the site is paid for by ads. It is independent: it is not an official test site and it is not affiliated with any licensing office. Every question is written from the official driver's handbook for that place, and each page lists its sources and the date it was checked.

  • Practice sets with an explanation after every answer.
  • A mock exam for each knowledge test, timed where the official time limit is known.
  • Study guides written from the official handbook.
  • Road signs tests and right-of-way scenario sets.
  • A study planner and a mistake notebook that saves every wrong answer.
  • A Listen mode that reads questions and answers aloud, and a Print this set button for a worksheet with an answer key.

Treat the official handbook as the final word. Practice questions help learners find gaps, but the real test is based on the handbook, and rules can change.

Knowledge tests in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia

Each place sets its own test, so send learners to the page for the place where they will be tested. A few examples from official sources:

  • Ontario: to get a G1 licence you must be at least 16 and pass a knowledge test about the rules of the road and traffic signs, plus a vision test.
  • Alberta: for a Class 7 learner's licence you take a knowledge test at a registry agent and pass a vision test.
  • California: an instruction permit needs a multiple-choice knowledge test based on the California Driver's Handbook.
  • Great Britain: you must pass the theory test before you can book the driving test. The car theory test has multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception video test.
  • New South Wales: you must pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) before you can apply for a learner licence.

Right-of-way scenarios and road signs

Right-of-way questions are where many learners lose marks. The scenario sets show a real situation, such as a four-way stop or a left turn at a green light, and ask who goes first. Road signs tests drill shapes, colours and symbols.

Ask learners to say the rule out loud before they pick an answer. If they cannot name the rule, they are guessing.

Study guides, study plans and the mistake notebook

  1. Read one study guide chapter.
  2. Do a practice set and read every explanation.
  3. Open the mistake notebook and retest the questions they got wrong.
  4. Use the study planner to spread the work over the days left before the test date.
  5. Finish with the mock exam once practice scores are steady.

Tips for instructors and parents

  • In class, put a practice set on the projector and vote on each answer before you reveal it.
  • Use Print this set for a paper worksheet with an answer key. It works well for quiet review or a quick quiz.
  • Listen mode reads questions aloud. It helps learners who find reading hard or who are still learning English.
  • Parents can sit with the learner for one practice set a day and talk through each explanation.
  • The study planner can make a calendar file so practice days show up on the learner's phone.

Share links and print sets for your learners to study with. Please do not copy the questions into your own course materials or sell them.

60-minute lesson: right-of-way and road signs

Goals

  • Learners can explain who goes first at common intersections.
  • Learners can name the meaning of sign shapes and colours.
  • Each learner leaves with a study plan for their test date.

You need

  • Printed copies of one road signs practice set (Print this set)
  • Learners' own phones, if allowed
  • The official driver's handbook for your province, state or country

Plan (60 minutes)

MinutesWhat to do
5Warm-up: ask learners which rule they find most confusing. Write the answers on the board.
10Read the right-of-way section of the study guide together and match it to the page in the official handbook.
15Run the right-of-way scenario set on the projector. For each question, learners vote, then you reveal the answer and read the explanation.
10Hand out the printed road signs set. Learners work in pairs, then mark their own sheets with the answer key.
10Learners do one practice set on their phones. Show them where the mistake notebook keeps their wrong answers.
5Learners open the study planner, pick their test and test date, and save the plan or calendar file.
5Wrap-up: review the board from the warm-up and hand out the learner handout.
