What to know before the test
- To get a G1 you must be at least 16 and pass a vision test and a knowledge test on the rules of the road and traffic signs.
- You need a total score of at least 80% to pass. There is no time limit, but DriveTest suggests arriving at least one hour before the centre closes.
- No appointment is needed for the knowledge test at a DriveTest centre. Computer tests are offered in 32 languages, including English and French.
- If you fail, your results count for one year, so you only retake the sections you did not pass.
- G1 drivers must have a blood alcohol level of zero and drive with a fully licensed driver who has at least four years of driving experience.
- You have five years to finish graduated licensing. If you do not get your full G licence in that time, you have to start over.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Ontario G1 test?

Can I take the G1 test online?
No. The knowledge test is supervised at a DriveTest centre. You can also take it at ServiceOntario at Bay and College in Toronto, by appointment only.

Not at a DriveTest centre. Just arrive at least one hour before the office closes. Appointments are only needed for verbal tests or if you need an interpreter.

Bring two pieces of original, valid identification, the test fee, and your glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive.
