Questionário temático 1: Subject lines and clear structure

  1. Pergunta 1 de 15

What is the main job of an email's subject line?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: C. To tell the reader what the email is about and what they need to do

A specific subject line tells the reader the topic and, if possible, the action needed, so they know whether to open and act on it.

  2. Pergunta 2 de 15

Which subject line is best for an email asking your manager to approve Saturday overtime by Friday?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: C. Please approve Saturday overtime by Friday

It is short, names the topic, uses an action word and gives the deadline.

  3. Pergunta 3 de 15

About how long should a subject line be so that it shows fully in most inboxes?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: C. Under about 50 characters (6 to 8 words)

Writing advice from the Language Portal of Canada is to keep subject lines under 50 characters or 6 to 8 words; some phones show only 33 to 44 characters.

  4. Pergunta 4 de 15

When is the best time to write the subject line?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: A. After you write the message, when you know exactly what it says

Writing the subject line last lets you sum up what the message really says and what the reader must do.

  5. Pergunta 5 de 15

Where should you state the purpose of a routine work email?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: B. In the first one or two sentences

  6. Pergunta 6 de 15

The direct approach has three parts. Which order is correct?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: D. Main idea, then details, then a goodwill close

In the direct approach, the main idea comes first, then the details the reader needs, and the message ends with a goodwill close.

  7. Pergunta 7 de 15

Which message is best written with the direct approach?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: B. A routine request for a copy of last month's invoice

The direct approach suits routine requests, replies and good news; refusals and unwelcome announcements are bad news.

  8. Pergunta 8 de 15

Canada.ca's plain-language guidance gives a best length for most sentences. What is it?
    Mostrar resposta

    Resposta: A. Under 15 to 20 words

  9. Pergunta 9 de 15

You need to tell a coworker about three unrelated things: a fire drill, a lost key and a holiday party. What is usually best?
    Mostrar resposta

  10. Pergunta 10 de 15

A new employee must follow four steps, in order, to reset their password. How should you present the steps?
    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: A. As a numbered list

Numbered lists are for steps or a set order; bullets are for items with no special order.

  11. Pergunta 11 de 15

What is the main problem with how this email is organized?

    Subject: Saturday

    Hi Marco,

As you know, we have been very busy this month. The spring inventory count is coming up, and head office wants every store to finish counting before the end of the quarter. Last year the count took longer than planned because two people were sick, and we all had to stay late. I've been thinking about how to avoid that this year, and I talked to Dana about it on Monday.

Anyway, could you work an extra shift this Saturday, March 7, from 8 am to 2 pm? I need to know by Wednesday at noon.

    Thanks,
    Aisha

    Mostrar resposta

Resposta: D. The request and deadline are buried at the end

The main point and the deadline should come first; here they are hidden at the end after long background.
