اختبار الموضوع 1: Canadian workplace culture and small talk

  1. السؤال 1 من 16

Your shift starts at 8:00 am. When is the best time to arrive?
    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: C. A few minutes early, so you are ready at 8:00

Punctuality matters in Canadian workplaces. Arriving a few minutes early means you can start work on time.

  2. السؤال 2 من 16

You see a coworker for the first time today. What is usual in most Canadian workplaces?
    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: D. Greet them, for example "Good morning!"

Greet coworkers the first time you see them each day. You do not need to greet them again every time you pass.

  3. السؤال 3 من 16

A coworker says "Hi, how are you?" as you pass in the hallway. What is the most natural answer?
    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: C. Good, thanks. How about you?

"How are you?" is usually a greeting, not a real question about your health. A short, friendly answer and a question back is normal.

  4. السؤال 4 من 16

Which topic is usually safe for small talk with a new coworker?
    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: A. Plans for the long weekend

Weekend plans, weather, food and local events are safe topics. Pay, religion and politics are personal and best avoided.

  5. السؤال 5 من 16

Listen. What does Sofia ask Marco?
استمع ثم أجب. يظهر النص المكتوب بعد إجابتك.
    لا يوجد صوت؟ اقرأ النص

Sofia: Hi, you must be new here. I'm Sofia. I work in receiving.
Marco: Hi Sofia, I'm Marco. Today's my first day in shipping.
Sofia: Welcome! What should I call you? Marco, or something shorter?
Marco: Marco is fine. Nice to meet you.

    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: C. What name he likes to be called

Sofia asks, "What should I call you?" Asking what name someone prefers is polite. Marco tells her about shipping without being asked.

    النص المكتوب

Sofia: Hi, you must be new here. I'm Sofia. I work in receiving.
Marco: Hi Sofia, I'm Marco. Today's my first day in shipping.
Sofia: Welcome! What should I call you? Marco, or something shorter?
Marco: Marco is fine. Nice to meet you.

  6. السؤال 6 من 16

Your manager signs her emails "Dr. Ana Lopez". If you use her title, what should you call her?
    أظهر الإجابة

    الإجابة: D. Dr. Lopez

In Canada, a title is used with the last name only, so "Dr. Lopez" is correct. Many workplaces simply use first names.

  7. السؤال 7 من 16

You forgot the name of a coworker you met yesterday. What is the best thing to do?
    أظهر الإجابة

    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: C. Anyway, I'd better get back to work. Talk later!

"I'd better get back to work" ends the chat in a friendly way. The other choices sound rude.

You are writing to a mixed group of coworkers. Which greeting includes everyone?
    أظهر الإجابة

  14. السؤال 14 من 16

A coworker borrowed your tools without asking. It just happened a second time. What is a good first step?
    أظهر الإجابة

الإجابة: B. Talk to them calmly and directly about it

Settlement advice is to address it calmly, kindly and directly when it happens a second time. If the problem continues, talk to your supervisor or HR.

الأسئلة الشائعة

What certificate do I get, and what is it not?

If you score 80% or more on the final assessment, you get a PassEveryTest Certificate of Completion. It shows you finished this practice course. It is not a CLB level, an official language test result or an employer or government certification.

Will this course give me a CLB level for immigration or citizenship?

No. Immigration and citizenship use approved language tests or other accepted proof set by the Government of Canada. This course is practice for everyday workplace English only.

How do the listening questions work?

Your device reads the workplace conversation aloud in a Canadian English voice. The question does not show the script. You can read the script after you answer.

Do the pay and schedule rules in the lessons apply to my job?

The lessons use federal labour standards as an example. They apply to federally regulated workplaces, such as banks and airlines. Other jobs follow the employment standards of the province or territory where you work, so check those for your exact rules.

How does the final assessment work?

It has 35 questions picked at random from the whole course, with a 35-minute time limit. You get a new mix each time, and you need 80% to pass.

Where can I get free English classes in Canada?

Eligible newcomers, such as permanent residents and protected persons, can take free LINC classes. Contact a newcomer services organization near you to get a language assessment and register.
