Topic quiz 1: Text and paragraph formatting

  1. Question 1 of 16

Which keyboard shortcut makes the selected text bold?
    Show answer

    Answer: D. Ctrl+B

Ctrl+B applies bold. Ctrl+I is italic, Ctrl+U is underline and Ctrl+K inserts a hyperlink.

  2. Question 2 of 16

You want the word MEMO centred at the top of the page. Which shortcut centres the selected paragraph?
    Show answer

    Answer: B. Ctrl+E

    Ctrl+E centres a paragraph. Ctrl+L aligns left, Ctrl+J justifies and Ctrl+C copies.

  3. Question 3 of 16

Which shortcut sets double line spacing for the selected paragraphs?
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Ctrl+2

Ctrl+2 sets double spacing, Ctrl+1 sets single spacing and Ctrl+5 sets 1.5-line spacing.

  4. Question 4 of 16

In the Paragraph dialog box, line spacing is set to Multiple at 1.15. What does that mean?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Lines are 15% further apart than single spacing

Microsoft explains that Multiple at 1.15 increases the space between lines by 15 percent compared with single spacing.

  5. Question 5 of 16

You want a gap after every paragraph in a report without pressing Enter twice. What should you change?
    Show answer

Answer: C. The Spacing After value in the Paragraph settings

Spacing Before and After in the Paragraph dialog box set the space above and below each paragraph, so you don't need empty lines.

  6. Question 6 of 16

Which indent keeps the first line of a paragraph at the margin and indents all the lines under it?
    Show answer

    Answer: D. A hanging indent

A hanging indent (Special > Hanging) indents every line except the first. Its shortcut is Ctrl+T.

  7. Question 7 of 16

You need to copy the look of one bold, blue label to five other labels. What is the quickest way?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Double-click Format Painter, click each label, then press Esc

A single click on Format Painter works only once. Double-click it to apply the format to several places, and press Esc to stop.

  8. Question 8 of 16

Which pair of shortcuts copies formatting and then pastes that formatting somewhere else?
    Show answer

    Answer: B. Ctrl+Alt+C, then Ctrl+Alt+V

Ctrl+Alt+C copies formatting and Ctrl+Alt+V pastes it. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V copy and paste the content itself.

  9. Question 9 of 16

You paste text from a web page into a memo. You want plain text only: no fonts, bold, pictures or tables from the web page. Which paste option do you choose?
    Show answer

    Answer: B. Keep Text Only

Keep Text Only discards all formatting and non-text items such as pictures and tables. Merge Formatting still keeps some bold and italic.

  10. Question 10 of 16

What does the Merge Formatting paste option do?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Drops most formatting, keeps some bold and italic, and takes on the style where you paste

Merge Formatting discards most formatting applied directly to the text, keeps bold or italic used on some of the words, and matches the paragraph where you paste.

  11. Question 11 of 16

Your memo has strange gaps. You want to see the hidden spaces, tab marks and paragraph marks. What do you use?
    Show answer

    Answer: D. The Show/Hide button (Ctrl+Shift+8)

Show/Hide turns hidden characters such as spaces, paragraph marks and tab marks on and off. Its shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+8.

  12. Question 12 of 16

Which shortcut opens Find and Replace so you can change one word to another?
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Ctrl+H

Ctrl+H opens Replace. Ctrl+F searches in the Navigation pane, Ctrl+R aligns right and Ctrl+K inserts a hyperlink.

  13. Question 13 of 16

You replace "Lee" with "Li" using Replace All, and the city name "Leeds" becomes "Lids". Which search option would have stopped this?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Find whole words only

Find whole words only avoids partial matches, so "Lee" inside a longer word is not changed. Match case only checks capital letters.

  14. Question 14 of 16

A word in your letter has a red squiggly underline. What does that usually mean?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Word thinks the word may be spelled wrong

Word marks possible spelling errors with a red squiggly line and possible grammar errors with a blue squiggly line.

  15. Question 15 of 16

Your company name, Lumiq, is marked as a spelling error in every document. It is spelled correctly. What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Right-click it and choose Add to Dictionary

Add to Dictionary tells Word the word is correct, so it stops flagging it.

  16. Question 16 of 16

In the From and To lines of a memo, you want to start a new line without starting a new paragraph. Which keys do you press?
    Show answer

    Answer: A. Shift+Enter

Shift+Enter inserts a line break inside the same paragraph. Ctrl+Enter inserts a page break and Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar inserts a nonbreaking space.

What to know before the test

  • An automatic table of contents is built from text that has heading styles. After you make changes, update it with Update Table and choose to update page numbers only or the entire table.
  • Ctrl+Shift+E turns Track Changes on or off, and Ctrl+Alt+M inserts a comment (Word for Windows).
  • Each page in a Word document starts with one-inch margins. You change them under Layout > Margins.
  • When you open a template, Word creates a copy of it, so the template itself stays unchanged.
  • AutoSave saves a file automatically every few seconds while you work when the file is stored on OneDrive or SharePoint.
  • In the Accessibility Checker, missing alternative text and a table with no header row are Errors; low colour contrast and merged table cells are Warnings.
  • A PDF keeps your formatting, but it does not stop people from editing the content, because many programs, including Word, can edit PDFs.

Frequently asked questions

What certificate do I get, and what is it not?

If you score 80% or more on the final assessment, you can download a certificate of completion for this course. It shows that you finished a general skills course. It is not an accredited qualification, an employer's assessment or a Microsoft certification such as Microsoft Office Specialist.

Which version of Word does this course use?

The lessons describe Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows. Most steps are similar in other versions, but some menus differ, Word for the web has fewer features, and Mac keyboard shortcuts are different.

Do I need Word to take the course?

No. You can read the lessons and answer the quizzes in your browser. To try the practical exercises (a memo, a report, a shift notice, a merged letter and a final review), you need Word on a computer.

How does the final assessment work?

It has 35 questions picked at random from the course question bank, and you have 35 minutes. You get a new mix of questions each time you try, and you need 80% to pass.

Can I use the exercise documents at work?

They are practice examples only. At work, use your employer's own templates and style rules, and follow its policies on privacy and on sharing files outside the organization.

Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?

No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace any licence, certification or training required by law.
