Topic quiz 1: How situational judgement tests work

  1. Question 1 of 15

What does a situational judgement test mainly check?
    Show answer

Answer: C. How well you judge the best actions to take in work situations

A situational judgement test shows you work scenarios and asks how well you judge possible actions. It checks judgement, not typing, product knowledge or math.

  2. Question 2 of 15

What are you usually given in each situational judgement question?
    Show answer

Answer: B. A short work scenario and a list of possible actions

Each item describes a realistic work situation and lists actions you could take. You then pick or rate the actions.

  3. Question 3 of 15

Tests of judgement often cover which group of skills?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Communication, people skills, initiative and decision making

Tests of judgement look at the skills used to solve work problems: communication, interpersonal skills, initiative, decision making, analytical thinking and managing actions.

  4. Question 4 of 15

Some tests ask you to rate each action on its own, for example from "counterproductive" to "effective". Can two actions get the same rating?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Yes. Each action is judged on its own.

In rating formats, you judge every action separately against the scenario. More than one action can be effective, or ineffective.

  5. Question 5 of 15

Do you need special knowledge of a job to answer most situational judgement questions?
    Show answer

Answer: A. No. You use the facts in the scenario and general work principles.

Situational judgement items are written so that no specialist knowledge is needed. You use the facts in the scenario and principles like safety, policy and communication.

  6. Question 6 of 15

A scenario starts: "You have worked at a hotel front desk for two days." Why does this detail matter?
    Show answer

Answer: B. It shows your role and how much you can decide on your own

Read who you are first. A new employee usually checks with a supervisor before making big decisions, so the best action must fit your role and authority.

  7. Question 7 of 15

When you work through a scenario, which kind of option should you usually rule out first?
    Show answer

Answer: C. One that puts someone at risk or breaks a rule

Safety first and follow policy come before everything else. An action that creates danger or breaks rules is rarely effective, however fast it seems.

  8. Question 8 of 15

Two options both report the same problem to your supervisor. One reports it now; the other waits until your weekly meeting. Which is usually more effective?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Reporting it now, while there is still time to fix it

Communicate early. A timely report lets people fix a problem before it grows; waiting a week adds risk for no good reason.

  9. Question 9 of 15

You have 30 questions to answer in 35 minutes. About how much time is that per question?
    Show answer

    Answer: A. 70 seconds

    35 minutes is 2,100 seconds, and 2,100 ÷ 30 = 70 seconds. 35 ÷ 30 = 1.17 minutes, which is not 1 minute 17 seconds.

  10. Question 10 of 15

A test starts with a self-assessment section that asks how you usually behave at work. How should you answer it?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Honestly, since you may be asked about your answers later

Answer self-assessment questions honestly. Employers may ask about your answers at an interview.

  11. Question 11 of 15

An option solves the customer's problem quickly but breaks a company rule. Another option solves it within the rules. Which is usually more effective?
    Show answer

Answer: B. The option that solves it within the rules

Follow policy. The best action solves the problem without creating a new one, such as a broken rule or an unfair exception.

  12. Question 12 of 15

A question asks for the MOST effective response, and two options both seem helpful. How do you choose?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Pick the one that fixes the main problem safely and within your role

Compare helpful options by asking: does it fix the real problem, is it safe, is it within my role and is it timely? The one that does all of these is most effective.

  13. Question 13 of 15

At a hotel front desk, a guest says their room was not cleaned. Which response is the LEAST effective?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Say housekeeping is not your department

Customer service means taking ownership. Saying "not my department" leaves the guest stuck; the other options solve the problem or keep the guest informed.

  14. Question 14 of 15

A coworker says, "In these tests, the right answer is always to tell your manager." What is the problem with this advice?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Some problems are yours to solve first, as part of your own job

Escalate when a problem is beyond your role, skill or safety, or when your own fix did not work. Small problems within your job are usually best handled by you.

  15. Question 15 of 15

In a store, a display is about to fall near customers, a customer wants a price check and the phone is ringing. What should you deal with first?
    Show answer

Answer: D. The display, because people could be hurt

Safety first. When several things need you at once, deal with the risk to people before routine tasks like phones and price checks.

What to know before the test

  • The federal public service's Test of Judgement 374 was designed to assess the judgement needed to solve problems in work-related situations, including communication, interpersonal skills, initiative, decision making, analytical thinking and action management.
  • The Test of Judgement 374 had 52 multiple-choice questions and a 75-minute time limit. It was replaced by the Unsupervised Test of Judgement 376 on July 22, 2025.
  • The federal Test of Judgement is used to staff officer-level positions. The supervised test (TOJ 377) can be used alone or after the unsupervised test (TOJ 376); in the two-step process, applicants must pass both.
  • In the UK Civil Service Judgement Test, candidates rate four actions per scenario as counterproductive, ineffective, fairly effective or effective, and more than one action can get the same rating.
  • The UK Civil Service Judgement Test is not timed; most people take two to four minutes per scenario, and no specialist knowledge or experience is needed.
  • The Skills for Success model says collaboration includes managing difficult interactions: discussing, negotiating and resolving them in a sensitive and helpful manner.
  • Workers in Canada have three basic health and safety rights: the right to know, the right to participate and the right to refuse unsafe work.
  • Workers must report workplace hazards and incidents to the supervisor or employer, and tell them about missing or defective equipment that may be dangerous.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Certificate of Completion, and what is it not?

It shows that you finished this course and scored at least 80% on the final assessment. It is not an accredited qualification, a government or employer certification, or a result from any test publisher.

Are these questions from real employer tests?

No. Every scenario was written for this course to practise the same kind of judgement. Real tests differ between employers, so read your invitation and the test instructions carefully.

How does the final assessment work?

It has 30 questions drawn at random from the course question bank, with a 35-minute time limit. You need 80% to pass, and each attempt gives a new mix of questions.

Do real tests always ask for one best answer?

No. Some ask for the most effective action, some for the most and least effective, some ask you to rank actions, and some ask you to rate each action on a scale. This course uses one-best-answer questions, but the same principles apply to every format.

Do I need work experience to do well?

No. The lessons teach six principles and a step-by-step method that work in any job. Read each scenario closely, especially who you are and what your role allows.

How should I practise?

Read one lesson, take its untimed topic quiz and read the explanation for every answer you got wrong. When you score well on all six topics, try the timed final assessment.

Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?

No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace any licence, certification or training required by law.
