What to know before the test

  • The CELPIP-General Writing test has two tasks, Writing an Email and Responding to Survey Questions, and takes 53 minutes.
  • Task 1 has 27 minutes and Task 2 has 26 minutes. Each response should be about 150–200 words.
  • In Task 1 you write an email about an everyday matter and are usually asked to do about three things. In Task 2 you choose between two options and explain your choice.
  • Each Writing performance is rated by four to six trained writing raters who work independently. If their ratings disagree, a benchmark rater is assigned.
  • Writing is rated on four dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. Each dimension has five performance levels.
  • Each task has an automatic word counter, and the test includes an automatic spelling checker. Being far over or under the suggested length may lower your score.
  • The CELPIP-General LS test assesses only Listening and Speaking, so it has no Writing test.
  • CELPIP levels line up with Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, and scores are available 2–4 business days after the test date (not counting weekends or holidays).

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official CELPIP Writing test?

No. This is an independent practice course. The prompts, model answers and questions are original and only follow the task types of the real test. For official samples, use the free practice tests on the CELPIP website.

What does the certificate of completion show?

It shows that you finished this course and scored at least 80% on its final assessment. It is not a CELPIP result or level, and it cannot be used as proof of English for immigration, citizenship, work or school.

Can this course score my writing or predict my CELPIP level?

No. Official Writing responses are rated by four to six trained CELPIP raters. The quizzes, model answers and self-check lists here are practice feedback only, not an official CELPIP score.

How long should my Writing answers be?

About 150–200 words for each task. There is a word counter under each task. A little over or under is fine, but being far over or under may lower your score.

Do I need the Writing test for Canadian citizenship?

The official CELPIP website says the CELPIP-General LS test, which has no Writing test, covers the Listening and Speaking skills for the citizenship language requirement. Always check the Government of Canada's current requirements before you book.

How long is the final assessment?

It has 35 multiple-choice questions in 35 minutes, drawn at random from the whole course. It tests your knowledge of the tasks and of good writing; the real Writing test asks you to write two responses in 53 minutes.

Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?

No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace any licence, certification or training required by law.
