Manual Handling Course (EU) 2026
This course is for workers in EU countries who lift, carry, push or pull loads, and for people who plan this work. It explains why back injuries happen, what EU law expects (avoid, assess, reduce), how to assess a load, safe lifting, team handling, pushing and pulling, and why to report pain early. Each topic has a short lesson and an untimed quiz, followed by a timed 30-question final assessment; score 80% or more to earn a Certificate of Completion.
In breve
Questo corso gratuito ha circa 150 minuti di lezioni, 6 quiz tematici senza limite di tempo (96 domande in tutto) e una valutazione finale a tempo di 30 domande estratte a caso. Quiz tematico 1: Manual handling and why backs get hurt
-
Domanda 1 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: C. Pushing a loaded trolley
Manual handling covers lifting, holding, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying and moving a load by hand or bodily force.
-
Domanda 2 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. A patient who needs help to move
EU-OSHA says a load can be an object or a living being, such as a person or an animal.
-
Domanda 3 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. The back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs
EU-OSHA says work-related MSDs affect the back, neck, shoulders and upper limbs, as well as the lower limbs.
-
Domanda 4 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. Harm that builds up over time from repeated handling
Cumulative disorders come from continuous handling that gradually wears down the musculoskeletal system, for example low back pain.
-
Domanda 5 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. A broken toe after a load slips and falls
Acute injuries happen suddenly, for example cuts or fractures from an accident. The other options build up over time.
-
Domanda 6 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. Gradually, usually from several factors
EU-OSHA says most MSDs develop gradually and usually have several causes acting together.
-
Domanda 7 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. Lifting while bending and twisting
Lifting loads, especially while bending or twisting, is one of the physical risk factors EU-OSHA lists.
-
Domanda 8 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. High demands with little control
EU-OSHA lists high work demands with low autonomy, lack of breaks, long hours and low job satisfaction as organisational and psychosocial risk factors.
-
Domanda 9 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. A previous history of back problems
EU-OSHA lists previous back disorders, physical capacity and lack of experience or training as individual factors.
-
Domanda 10 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: D. Your muscles and spine have to work harder
Reaching out with the load needs more muscle force and increases the load on the spine.
-
Domanda 11 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. The risk rises when several factors combine
Each factor adds risk on its own, and the risk rises when several are present at the same time.
-
Domanda 12 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. Moderate forces repeated over a long time
OSHwiki notes that many MSDs come from moderate forces applied again and again over time, not only from sudden high forces.
-
Domanda 13 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: A. About one in three (33%)
The Sixth European Working Conditions Survey (2015) found 33% of workers carried or moved heavy loads for at least a quarter of their time.
-
Domanda 14 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: C. Construction and transport
More than half of workers in construction and transport face this exposure; in financial services and public administration it is 20% or less.
-
Domanda 15 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: D. About 63%
About 63% of workers who always carry heavy loads report MSDs, compared with 34% of those whose jobs never involve it.
-
Domanda 16 di 16
Mostra la risposta
Risposta: B. Almost half
The OSHwiki early-intervention article says MSDs cause almost 50% of absences of at least three days in the EU.

Cosa sapere prima del test
- Council Directive 90/269/EEC of 29 May 1990 sets the EU minimum requirements for manual handling of loads where there is a risk, particularly of back injury, to workers.
- Employers must first try to avoid manual handling, for example with mechanical equipment. If it cannot be avoided, they must assess the task and reduce the risk.
- Workers must be told about the protective measures, get information on the weight of loads where possible, and be trained in correct handling.
- Under the Framework Directive, safety and health training must take place during working hours and may not be at the workers' expense.
- EU-OSHA says there is no exact safe weight limit, but 20-25 kg is heavy for most people.
- In the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey, 33% of workers carried or moved heavy loads for at least a quarter of their working time.
- MSDs cause almost half of all work absences of three days or more in the EU, and the sooner a problem is managed, the less likely it is to lead to long-term work loss.
Domande frequenti
Is this an official or accredited manual handling certificate?
No. When you pass the final assessment you get a PassEveryTest Certificate of Completion, which shows you finished this general awareness course. It is not an accredited qualification or a legally required training certificate.
Does this course replace my employer's manual handling training?
No. Under EU law your employer must train you in correct handling for your own tasks, during working hours and at no cost to you. National laws and your employer's own procedures always apply.
What is the maximum weight I can lift at work in the EU?
EU law does not set one weight limit. EU-OSHA says there is no exact safe limit, but 20-25 kg is heavy for most people. Some countries set their own limits in national law, so check the rules where you work.
What does TILE mean, and is it in the law?
TILE stands for task, individual, load and environment. It is a common memory aid used in training, not a legal term, but it covers the factors listed in the annexes of Directive 90/269/EEC.
How does the final assessment work?
It has 30 questions drawn at random from the course question bank, with a 35-minute time limit. You need 80% to pass, and each attempt gives you a new mix of questions.
L’attestato è accreditato o riconosciuto ufficialmente?
