What to know before the test
- Canadian workers, including guards, have three basic health and safety rights: to know about hazards, to take part in health and safety, and to refuse unsafe work.
- Only the authorized person who placed a lockout lock and tag may remove them.
- CCOHS reports that about 60% of deaths in confined spaces are would-be rescuers. Call for help instead of going in.
- Pedestrians near forklifts should use designated walkways and make eye contact with the operator before crossing.
- A WHMIS safety data sheet has 16 sections and must be readily available to workers exposed to the product.
- Security guards have no general power to search. Their arrest powers come mainly from section 494 of the Criminal Code.
Frequently asked questions
Do safety rules apply to security guards on an industrial site?
Yes. You are a worker on the site, so you follow its PPE, walkway and lockout rules, and you have the same rights to know about hazards and to refuse unsafe work.
Can a guard search employees' bags or vehicles?
Only as the site's written policy allows and with the person's consent. If a person refuses, record it and report it as the policy says. Never use force to search.
What should I do if a trailer seal is broken or does not match?
Do not open or accept the trailer. Record the seal number, the trailer and driver details and the time, and report it to your supervisor or shipping and receiving.
Should I go in when a building alarm goes off at night?
Not alone. Watch from a safe place, call police and the keyholder as your post orders say, and wait for them before anyone goes inside.
Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?
No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace the security licence training required in your province or territory.
