Unit 1: Sounds and letters
Swedish uses the 26 letters of English plus three more: å, ä and ö. They come at the end of the alphabet, after z, so the alphabet has 29 letters. They are separate letters, not a and o with marks. In a dictionary, *ögon* (eyes) comes after *zoo*.
| Letters | Say them like |
|---|---|
| A, B, C, D | ah, bay, say, day |
| E, F, G, H | ay, eff, gay, hoh |
| I, J, K, L | ee, yee, koh, ell |
| M, N, O, P | emm, enn, oo, pay |
| Q, R, S, T | kü, air, ess, tay |
| U, V, W, X | ü (see below), vay, double-vay, eks |
| Y, Z | “ee” with round lips, say-ta |
| Å, Ä, Ö | o in “more”, e in “bed”, u in “fur” with round lips |
Key sounds
- o often sounds like “oo” in “moon”: *bok* (book), *sol* (sun).
- u has no English sound: say “oo” and “ee” at the same time, with round lips: *hus* (house), *du* (you).
- j sounds like y in “yes”: *ja* (yes). g before e, i, y, ä and ö also sounds like y: *göra* (to do).
- k before e, i, y, ä and ö, and tj, make a soft sh-like sound: *kyrka* (church), *tjugo* (twenty).
- sj, stj and sk before e, i, y, ä and ö make a breathy sh-sound: *sju* (seven), *stjärna* (star).
Every stressed vowel is long or short. One consonant after the vowel usually means a long vowel. Two consonants mean a short vowel: tak (roof) – tack (thanks), glas (a glass) – glass (ice cream).
- Hur stavar du det?How do you spell that?
- Jag heter Anna. A, N, N, A.My name is Anna. A, N, N, A.
- Mitt efternamn är Ek. E, K.My family name is Ek. E, K.

Unit 2: Hello and goodbye
The easiest greeting is Hej! (hi, hello). Swedes use it with everyone: friends, shop staff, your boss and older people. Hej hej! is also common and friendly. To say goodbye, say Hej då!
- Hej!Hello! Hi!
- Hej hej!Hi there! (friendly)
- God morgon!Good morning!
- God kväll!Good evening!
- God natt!Good night! (before bed)
- Hej då!Goodbye!
- Vi ses!See you!
- Vi ses i morgon!See you tomorrow!
- Ha det bra!Take care! Have a good time!
Du or ni?
Swedish has two words for “you”: du for one person and ni for two or more people. Today Swedes say du to almost everyone, also teachers, doctors and bosses. Using ni to one person sounds very formal or old-fashioned. People use first names, and titles like *herr* (Mr) and *fru* (Mrs) are rare.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Hur mår du? (How are you?) | Bra, tack. Och du? (Fine, thanks. And you?) |
| Vad heter du? (What is your name?) | Jag heter Omar. (My name is Omar.) |

| en-word | ett-word | plural | |
|---|---|---|---|
| my | min bror | mitt barn | mina föräldrar |
| your | din syster | ditt barn | dina syskon |
| our | vår son | vårt barn | våra barn |

Unit 8: Describing people
Swedish adjectives change their ending. With an en-word they have no ending, with an ett-word they add -t, and in the plural they add -a.
| en-word | ett-word | plural |
|---|---|---|
| Han är snäll. | Barnet är snällt. | De är snälla. |
| en ung kvinna | ett ungt par | unga människor |
| en lång man | ett långt namn | långa namn |
Put mycket (very) or ganska (quite) before an adjective: *Hon är mycket snäll. Han är ganska blyg.* Put inte (not) after the verb: *Jag är inte trött.* (I’m not tired.)
Some adjectives are a little irregular: *glad – glatt – glada*, *ny – nytt – nya*, *gammal – gammalt – gamla*, *liten – litet – små*. Adjectives that already end in -t do not add another t: *en kort film, ett kort namn*.
- långtall, long

“The” is an ending
Swedish puts “the” at the end of the noun. En-words add -en and ett-words add -et: *en säng → sängen* (the bed), *ett bord → bordet* (the table). If the noun ends in a vowel, add only -n or -t: *en soffa → soffan*.
| a … | the … | English |
|---|---|---|

When you talk about food in general, use no article: *Jag dricker kaffe.* (I drink coffee.) *Jag äter inte kött.* (I don’t eat meat.) Swedish has no word for “some” here: *Vill du ha te?* (Would you like some tea?)
At the table, people ask: *Vad vill du äta?* (What do you want to eat?) *Vill du ha mer?* (Would you like more?) Answer Ja tack (yes, please) or Nej tack (no, thank you).

To order politely, say Kan jag få …? (Can I have …?) or Jag skulle vilja ha … (I would like …). Jag tar … (I’ll have …) is also normal. Add tack at the end.

Unit 16: My day
In this unit you talk about your day. Good news: a Swedish verb has the same form for every person. Jag jobbar, du jobbar, hon jobbar, vi jobbar, de jobbar — it is always jobbar. In the present tense, almost every verb ends in -r.
| Infinitive | Present | Regola |
|---|---|---|
| jobba (to work) | jobbar | ends in -a: add -r |
| prata (to talk) | pratar | ends in -a: add -r |
| läsa (to read) | läser | change -a to -er |

| bo (to live) | bor | short verb: add -r |
| vara (to be) | är | irregular |
| göra (to do) | gör | irregular |
The verb comes second
In a Swedish statement, the verb is the second item. If you start with a time word, the subject moves after the verb: Jag äter frukost klockan sju. but Klockan sju äter jag frukost.
- Jag vaknar klockan sex.I wake up at six o’clock.
- Jag går upp halv sju.I get up at six thirty.
