Unit 1: Sounds and letters

Swedish uses the 26 letters of English plus three more: å, ä and ö. They come at the end of the alphabet, after z, so the alphabet has 29 letters. They are separate letters, not a and o with marks. In a dictionary, *ögon* (eyes) comes after *zoo*.

LettersSay them like
A, B, C, Dah, bay, say, day
E, F, G, Hay, eff, gay, hoh
I, J, K, Lee, yee, koh, ell
M, N, O, Pemm, enn, oo, pay
Q, R, S, Tkü, air, ess, tay
U, V, W, Xü (see below), vay, double-vay, eks
Y, Z“ee” with round lips, say-ta
Å, Ä, Öo in “more”, e in “bed”, u in “fur” with round lips

Key sounds

  • o often sounds like “oo” in “moon”: *bok* (book), *sol* (sun).
  • u has no English sound: say “oo” and “ee” at the same time, with round lips: *hus* (house), *du* (you).
  • j sounds like y in “yes”: *ja* (yes). g before e, i, y, ä and ö also sounds like y: *göra* (to do).
  • k before e, i, y, ä and ö, and tj, make a soft sh-like sound: *kyrka* (church), *tjugo* (twenty).
  • sj, stj and sk before e, i, y, ä and ö make a breathy sh-sound: *sju* (seven), *stjärna* (star).

Every stressed vowel is long or short. One consonant after the vowel usually means a long vowel. Two consonants mean a short vowel: tak (roof) – tack (thanks), glas (a glass) – glass (ice cream).

  • Hur stavar du det?How do you spell that?
  • Jag heter Anna. A, N, N, A.My name is Anna. A, N, N, A.

Unit 2: Hello and goodbye

The easiest greeting is Hej! (hi, hello). Swedes use it with everyone: friends, shop staff, your boss and older people. Hej hej! is also common and friendly. To say goodbye, say Hej då!

  • Hej!Hello! Hi!

  • God morgon!Good morning!
  • God kväll!Good evening!
  • God natt!Good night! (before bed)
  • Hej då!Goodbye!
  • Vi ses!See you!
  • Vi ses i morgon!See you tomorrow!
  • Ha det bra!Take care! Have a good time!

Du or ni?

Swedish has two words for “you”: du for one person and ni for two or more people. Today Swedes say du to almost everyone, also teachers, doctors and bosses. Using ni to one person sounds very formal or old-fashioned. People use first names, and titles like *herr* (Mr) and *fru* (Mrs) are rare.

QuestionAnswer
Hur mår du? (How are you?)Bra, tack. Och du? (Fine, thanks. And you?)
Vad heter du? (What is your name?)Jag heter Omar. (My name is Omar.)

Every Swedish noun is an en-word or an ett-word. Most nouns are en-words. Always learn a noun with its article: *en bror* (a brother), *ett barn* (a child).

My and your

“My” and “your” change with the noun: en-word → min / din, ett-word → mitt / ditt, plural → mina / dina. Hans (his), hennes (her) and deras (their) never change.

en-wordett-wordplural
mymin brormitt barnmina föräldrar
yourdin systerditt barndina syskon
ourvår sonvårt barnvåra barn

To introduce someone, say Det här är … (This is …): *Det här är min fru, Lena.* *Det här är mina barn, Leo och Ella.*

en-wordett-wordplural
Han är snäll.Barnet är snällt.De är snälla.
en ung kvinnaett ungt parunga människor
en lång manett långt namnlånga namn

Put mycket (very) or ganska (quite) before an adjective: *Hon är mycket snäll. Han är ganska blyg.* Put inte (not) after the verb: *Jag är inte trött.* (I’m not tired.)

Some adjectives are a little irregular: *glad – glatt – glada*, *ny – nytt – nya*, *gammal – gammalt – gamla*, *liten – litet – små*. Adjectives that already end in -t do not add another t: *en kort film, ett kort namn*.

  • ett köka kitchen
  • ett vardagsruma living room

“The” is an ending

Swedish puts “the” at the end of the noun. En-words add -en and ett-words add -et: *en säng → sängen* (the bed), *ett bord → bordet* (the table). If the noun ends in a vowel, add only -n or -t: *en soffa → soffan*.

At the table, people ask: *Vad vill du äta?* (What do you want to eat?) *Vill du ha mer?* (Would you like more?) Answer Ja tack (yes, please) or Nej tack (no, thank you).
