Cosa sapere prima del test
- The test has 18 written questions: 6 on Austria's democratic order, 6 on Austrian history and 6 on the history of your federal state.
- Each question has four options, and one to three of them are correct. A wrong tick gives zero points for that question; a partly correct answer can earn part of a point.
- You have two hours and may not use any aids. You pass with at least half of the points in each area, or at least two-thirds of all points.
- The test is run by your federal state government, at least once every six months. You are told the date, place and topics at least eight weeks before, and you may retake it as often as you need.
- Children under 14 do not need the test. A school certificate in history and social studies at year 4 level of lower secondary school also counts as proof.
- Citizenship by grant usually needs at least 10 years of lawful, unbroken residence, including at least 5 years of settled residence, plus German at level B1.
Domande frequenti
How many questions are on the Austrian citizenship test?
There are 18 questions: 6 on the democratic order, 6 on Austrian history and 6 on the history of your federal state. You have two hours.
What is the pass mark for the Staatsbürgerschaftsprüfung?
You pass if you get at least half of the points in each of the three areas, or at least two-thirds of all points (12 of 18). The result is only "passed" or "not passed".
Can more than one answer be correct?
Yes. In the real test each question has four options, and one, two or three can be correct. If you tick a wrong option, that question gets zero points. Our practice questions have one correct answer each.
Is the test the same in every federal state?
Two areas, the democratic order and Austrian history, follow the same federal syllabus everywhere. The third area is the history of your own federal state, and each state government sets that part.
What happens if I fail the citizenship test?
You can retake it as often as you need. The state government agrees a new date with you.
Who does not have to take the test?
Children under 14, children who meet the school rules, people with a school certificate in history and social studies at year 4 level of lower secondary school, and people who cannot take it for lasting health reasons shown by an official medical report.
