Austria Driving Theory Test (Führerschein B) 2026
Practise for the Austrian computer theory test (theoretische Fahrprüfung) for a category B car licence. The real test has two modules, basic knowledge (GW) and category B, each with at least 20 main questions and 30 minutes, and you need 80% of the points in each. These original questions in English cover Austrian licence rules, L17, probation, alcohol and speed limits and priority, plus the road rules and signs shared across continental Europe.
Quick answer
Pass mark: At least 80% of the possible points in each module (basic knowledge GW and category B, 30 minutes each). Each module has at least 20 main questions, sometimes with follow-up questions. A question can have more than one correct answer, and you must mark all of them. Time limit: 60 minutes. It is run by Authorised test centres, mostly driving schools, under a supervisor appointed by the provincial governor (Landeshauptmann). Minimum age: 18; 17 on the L17 route (training from 15 and a half, at least 3,000 km with an accompanying driver). Practise here for free with 250 questions, each with the answer and an explanation. Checked against official sources on October 13, 2026.

The real test: At least 80% of the possible points in each module (basic knowledge GW and category B, 30 minutes each). Each module has at least 20 main questions, sometimes with follow-up questions. A question can have more than one correct answer, and you must mark all of them.
What to know before the test
- First-time applicants take two modules on a computer: basic knowledge (Grundwissen, GW) and the category B module. Each module has at least 20 main questions, and follow-up questions can be added.
- You have 30 minutes for each module. A module is passed with at least 80% of the possible points, and you repeat only a module you failed.
- A question can have more than one correct answer. You must mark every correct answer; marking a wrong one makes the whole question wrong.
- You must pass the theory test before the practical test. If you do not pass the practical test within 18 months, you must take the theory test again. After a fail, you wait at least 12 days before a retake.
- The L17 route (early category B licence) lets you get your licence before 18: you can start training at 15 and a half, drive at least 3,000 km with an accompanying driver and take the practical test from your 17th birthday.
- New drivers have a three-year probation period (Probezeit) with a 0.1 g/l alcohol limit. Serious offences lead to a follow-up course (Nachschulung) and one more year of probation each time.
- The general alcohol limit is below 0.5 g/l in the blood or 0.25 mg/l in the breath. Stricter limits apply to some drivers, such as those on probation.
- General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on other roads and 130 km/h on motorways, unless signs show a different limit.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Austrian theory test?
For a first car licence you take two modules, basic knowledge (GW) and category B. Each has at least 20 main questions, and follow-up questions can be added, so the exact number can vary.
What is the pass mark for the Austrian theory test?
You need at least 80% of the possible points in each module. Our mock exam uses two sections of 20 questions with 16 needed in each, and a 60-minute timer.
Can a theory test question have more than one correct answer?
Yes. Some questions have several correct answers, and you must mark all of them. If you miss one or mark a wrong one, the question counts as wrong.
What happens if I fail one module?
You repeat only the module you failed. You must wait at least 12 days before you take it again.
What is L17 in Austria?
L17 is the early route to a category B licence. You start training at 15 and a half, drive at least 3,000 km with an accompanying driver and with extra sessions at the driving school, and can take the practical test from age 17.
How long is the probation period for new drivers?
Three years. During that time the alcohol limit is 0.1 g/l, and serious offences lead to a follow-up course and one more year of probation.
