À savoir avant l’examen

  • First-time applicants take two modules on a computer: basic knowledge (Grundwissen, GW) and the category B module. Each module has at least 20 main questions, and follow-up questions can be added.
  • You have 30 minutes for each module. A module is passed with at least 80% of the possible points, and you repeat only a module you failed.
  • A question can have more than one correct answer. You must mark every correct answer; marking a wrong one makes the whole question wrong.
  • You must pass the theory test before the practical test. If you do not pass the practical test within 18 months, you must take the theory test again. After a fail, you wait at least 12 days before a retake.
  • The L17 route (early category B licence) lets you get your licence before 18: you can start training at 15 and a half, drive at least 3,000 km with an accompanying driver and take the practical test from your 17th birthday.
  • New drivers have a three-year probation period (Probezeit) with a 0.1 g/l alcohol limit. Serious offences lead to a follow-up course (Nachschulung) and one more year of probation each time.
  • The general alcohol limit is below 0.5 g/l in the blood or 0.25 mg/l in the breath. Stricter limits apply to some drivers, such as those on probation.
  • General speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on other roads and 130 km/h on motorways, unless signs show a different limit.
