Quiz thématique 1 : What to delegate and to whom

  1. Question 1 sur 15

What does delegation mean at work?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: C. Giving someone a task and the authority to do it, while you stay accountable

Delegation hands over the work and the authority to do it. The person who delegates is still accountable for the result.

  2. Question 2 sur 15

Which task is usually the easiest to delegate?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: D. A routine task with clear steps

Simple tasks with clear steps are the easiest to hand over. Strategy, confidential matters and licensed work usually stay with the right person.

  3. Question 3 sur 15

Which kind of work should a manager usually keep rather than delegate?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: A. Setting the team's vision and long-term plan

High-value work such as vision, strategy and long-term planning normally stays with the manager. Routine work can be handed over.

  4. Question 4 sur 15

How can delegation help the employees who take on the work?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: D. It helps them build skills and grow

Delegation develops people. They learn new skills by doing the work, with support from the person who delegated it.

  5. Question 5 sur 15

Which is a warning sign that a supervisor is not delegating enough?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: A. Important tasks are left undone while they handle routine work

Being bogged down in routine tasks while important work is not done is a common sign that a supervisor should hand more work to others.

  6. Question 6 sur 15

When you choose who to give a task to, what should you think about first?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: A. Their skills, workload and interest

Match the task to someone with the right skills and enough time, and who wants the challenge. Location or seniority alone are poor reasons.

  7. Question 7 sur 15

An eager team member never says no, but they already have a full workload. What should you do?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: C. Check their workload so you do not overload them

Eager people can be overloaded easily. Knowing the limits of delegation means checking workload before adding more.

  8. Question 8 sur 15

A task needs a licence or authority that your team member does not have. What should you do?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: C. Keep it, or give it to someone who holds it

Work that legally or by policy needs a licence, certificate or authority must go to someone who has it. Being careful does not replace that requirement.

  9. Question 9 sur 15

A task involves private personnel files. What is the best approach?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: A. Keep it with people approved to handle those files

Sensitive or confidential work, such as personnel files or legal papers, should stay with people who are approved to handle it.

  10. Question 10 sur 15

At the "research" level of delegation, what does the employee do?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: B. Gathers information for you to decide on

At the research level, the employee collects facts, such as supplier prices, and you make the decision.

  11. Question 11 sur 15

At the "decide and inform" level of delegation, what does the employee do?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: D. Makes the choice and keeps you updated

Decide and inform gives the employee the decision. They keep you informed about what they chose.

  12. Question 12 sur 15

Which level of delegation gives the employee the most independence?
    Voir la réponse

    Réponse: D. Act independently

At the act-independently level, the employee handles the task from start to finish without supervision. It suits work they are well suited to.

  13. Question 13 sur 15

A team member has compared supplier quotes well for a year. What is a sensible next step?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: B. Move up a level, for example to decide and inform

When someone shows they can handle a task, give them more ownership by moving up a level of delegation.

  14. Question 14 sur 15

You delegated a report and it goes out late. Who is accountable for the result?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: D. You stay accountable; the team member is responsible for doing the work

Delegating hands over the work, not your accountability. You still answer for the result and should follow up.

  15. Question 15 sur 15

Every week a manager says "It is faster if I do it myself" about the same report. What is the likely result over time?
    Voir la réponse

Réponse: D. A bottleneck, and nobody else learns the report

Doing it yourself may save time once, but it creates a bottleneck and leaves no backup. Delegation reduces bottlenecks.

À savoir avant l’examen

  • The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says shift handover should be face to face, two-way (both people share responsibility for getting it right), and both spoken and written.
  • HSE describes three parts of an effective handover: preparation by the outgoing person, the handover itself, and cross-checking by the incoming person.
  • HSE states that many accidents have happened because of communication failures at shift handover. The Cullen Report found failed information transfer at handover was one of the factors in the Piper Alpha disaster.
  • Higher-risk handovers include maintenance that runs across a shift change, safety systems that are overridden, work that differs from normal, staff returning after a long absence, and handovers between experienced and inexperienced staff.
  • Ontario's training syllabus for security guards lists shift handover procedures, including how to update the next person on shift, among the basic security procedures.
  • In Alberta, supervisors must advise the workers they supervise of all known or reasonably foreseeable work hazards.
  • "Do you understand?" does not check understanding, because people often say yes anyway. Teach-back asks the person to explain in their own words.
  • The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) suggests that instructions for a delegated task cover what, how, why and when.

Questions fréquentes

What is the Certificate of Completion, and what is it not?

It shows that you finished this course and scored at least 80% on the final assessment. It is not an accredited qualification, a security licence, or a vendor, employer or government certification.

Who is this course for?

New supervisors, team leads and anyone who works shifts, for example in security, hotels, restaurants, stores and offices. You do not need to be a manager: everyone hands over work at the end of a shift or before a vacation.

How does the final assessment work?

It has 35 questions picked at random from the course's question bank, and you have 35 minutes. You get a new mix of questions each time you try.

Does this course replace my site's post orders or my employer's handover procedure?

No. Your post orders, handover forms and employer policies always come first. This course teaches general skills that help you use them well.

Are the handover logs in the lessons official forms?

No. They are examples written for this course. Use the log, checklist or system your workplace provides.

L’attestation est-elle accréditée ou reconnue officiellement ?

Non.
