Qué debes saber antes del examen
- Most red circles tell you what you must not do. Blue circles with no red border tell you what you must do.
- Triangles warn of a hazard ahead. On junction warning signs, the broader line shows the road that has priority.
- Direction signs are colour coded: blue for motorways, green for primary routes, white with a black border for local routes and brown for tourist attractions.
- UK speed limit signs show miles per hour. The national speed limit for cars is 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
- In Great Britain the multiple-choice part of the car theory test has 50 questions, and you have 57 minutes to answer them.
- You need at least 43 out of 50 in the multiple-choice part and 44 out of 75 in the hazard perception part. Your pass certificate is valid for 2 years.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the difference between a red circle and a blue circle?
Both give orders. A red circle usually tells you what you must not do, such as no entry or no right turn. A blue circle usually tells you what you must do, such as turn left or keep left.
Why are the STOP and GIVE WAY signs different shapes from other signs?
They break the normal shape rules on purpose. STOP is the only eight-sided sign and GIVE WAY is the only upside-down triangle, so drivers can recognise them quickly, even from behind.
What does the national speed limit sign mean?
It means the national limit for that type of road and vehicle applies. For a car that is 60 mph on a single carriageway and 70 mph on a dual carriageway or motorway.
Are road signs part of the UK theory test?
Yes. Road and traffic signs are one of the topics in the multiple-choice part of the theory test, and you need to know them for the practical driving test too.
Where can I study the official UK road signs?
The Highway Code shows the most common signs, and the Department for Transport guide "Know Your Traffic Signs" explains them in more detail. Both are free on GOV.UK.
