What to know before the test
- You can get an LPE school learner's permit at 14 or an LPD learner's permit at 15. A licensed driver 21 or older must sit beside you.
- Every non-commercial permit applicant takes a vision test. If you fail the written test, you cannot retake it the same day.
- The Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) starts at 16 and needs six months on a permit plus a driver safety course or 50 certified hours, 10 at night.
- POP holders may drive alone from 6 a.m. to midnight, and for six months may carry only one non-family passenger under 19.
- Drivers under 21 may not drive with a BAC of 0.02% or more. Refusing a chemical test brings a one-year revocation.
- Twelve points in two years means an automatic six-month revocation.
