This course is for room attendants and housekeepers starting work in Canadian hotels, motels and resorts. It covers cleaning a room in a safe order, WHMIS and cleaning chemicals, lifting, slips, sharps and working alone, guest privacy, keys and human trafficking awareness, and teamwork. Your employer must give you WHMIS training on the products you use; this course is background knowledge only and does not replace that training. Each of the five topics has a lesson and an untimed quiz, followed by a timed 30-question final assessment; score 80% or more to earn a Certificate of Completion.

Topic quiz 1: Cleaning a guest room step by step

  1. Question 1 of 16

What is a room attendant's main job?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Making guest rooms clean, safe and ready to the hotel's standard

Room attendants clean and refresh guest rooms to the standard the hotel sets. Check-in, cooking and repairs belong to other departments.

  2. Question 2 of 16

What does a "stayover" room usually mean?
    Show answer

Answer: A. The guest is staying another night

A stayover room is still occupied, so you tidy and refresh it rather than doing a full departure clean.

  3. Question 3 of 16

A room is marked "vacant clean, inspected". What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Leave it alone because it is ready to sell

An inspected vacant room has been cleaned and checked, so it should not be disturbed.

  4. Question 4 of 16

    What is a "rush room"?
    Show answer

Answer: A. A room the front desk needs quickly, often for an early arrival

Rush rooms are needed soon, so they usually go to the top of your list.

  5. Question 5 of 16

Before entering a guest room, what should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Knock, say "Housekeeping", wait and repeat before opening slowly

Knocking and announcing twice, then opening slowly while announcing again, protects guest privacy and your safety.

  6. Question 6 of 16

You open a door and find the guest inside. What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Apologize, ask when you may come back, and leave

If a guest is inside, politely offer to come back at a time that suits them.

  7. Question 7 of 16

Why do many hotels ask you to park the cart across the open doorway?
    Show answer

Answer: D. So nobody can walk into the room behind you

A cart across the doorway blocks the entrance while you work inside.

  8. Question 8 of 16

Why should you dust from high to low?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Anything that drops lands on surfaces you still have to wipe

Working top to bottom means falling dust lands on areas you will clean next.

  9. Question 9 of 16

In the bathroom, which area is usually cleaned last?
    Show answer

    Answer: A. The toilet

Clean from cleanest to dirtiest areas and leave the toilet for last so germs are not spread to cleaner surfaces.

  10. Question 10 of 16

    When is vacuuming usually done?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Last, working from the far end back towards the door

Vacuuming last picks up anything that fell during cleaning, and working back to the door avoids walking on finished carpet.

  11. Question 11 of 16

What is the purpose of colour-coded cloths?
    Show answer

Answer: B. To keep a cloth used on the toilet away from sinks, counters and glasses

Colour coding stops germs moving from dirty areas like toilets to surfaces guests touch with their mouth or hands.

  12. Question 12 of 16

A guest's drinking glasses are dirty. What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Replace them with clean glasses the way your hotel requires

Never wash glasses or cups in a guest bathroom sink; replace them with properly cleaned ones.

  13. Question 13 of 16

Before calling a check-out room clean, where should you check for left items?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Under the bed, in drawers, the closet, behind the door and the safe

Guests often leave items in hidden places, so check them all before releasing the room.

  14. Question 14 of 16

You notice a slow leak under the bathroom sink. What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Report it through the work order system or to your supervisor

Report maintenance problems so they can be fixed; a room with a safety problem should not be sold.

  15. Question 15 of 16

When removing trash and used linen, what should you look for before grabbing anything?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Guest belongings and sharps such as needles or broken glass

Looking first protects you from sharps and stops guest items being thrown away by mistake.

  16. Question 16 of 16

A guest in a stayover room has hung up their towels, which by the hotel's card means "I will reuse them". What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Follow the guest's choice and leave the towels

In a stayover room you follow the guest's choice about towels and sheets, as your hotel's program sets out.

What to know before the test

  • CCOHS describes hotel housekeeping as moderately heavy to heavy work, with back, neck, shoulder and arm injuries as the main risks.
  • Health Canada regulates WHMIS for suppliers, while provincial and territorial OHS authorities regulate WHMIS in most workplaces.
  • A WHMIS workplace label is needed when a hazardous product is decanted into another container, unless it is used right away.
  • A WHMIS safety data sheet has 16 sections in a set order and must be readily available to exposed workers.
  • Health Canada says it is never safe to mix bleach with other cleaning products, because toxic gases such as chloramine can form.
  • In British Columbia, employers must have a written procedure for checking the well-being of workers who work alone, including a check at the end of the shift.
  • The Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline, 1-833-900-1010, is confidential, multilingual and open 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official housekeeping or WHMIS certificate?

No. When you pass the final assessment you get a PassEveryTest Certificate of Completion, which shows you finished this general skills course. It is not an accredited qualification, a WHMIS training record, or any employer or government certification.

Do I need a licence to work as a hotel room attendant in Canada?

No licence is needed for the job itself. However, your employer must train you on the hazardous products you use under WHMIS, and on its own safety procedures. This course does not replace that training.

What should I do if a guest harasses or threatens me?

Leave the room, get to a safe spot and tell your supervisor or security; phone 911 when someone faces immediate danger. Provinces and territories have workplace violence and harassment laws; for example, Ontario requires employers to have violence and harassment policies and a way to summon immediate help.

What if I think a guest is a victim of human trafficking?

Do not confront anyone. Tell your supervisor or security. Public Safety Canada says to call 911 if you think someone may be a victim, or contact the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-833-900-1010.

How does the final assessment work?

It has 30 questions drawn at random from the course question bank, with a 40-minute time limit. You need 80% to pass, and each attempt gives you a new mix of questions.

Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?

No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace any licence, certification or training required by law.
