Key sounds

  • lh sounds like 'lli' in million: filho (son)

  • ão is a nasal sound, like 'ow' said through the nose: não (no), pão (bread)
  • h at the start of a word is silent: hotel sounds like 'otel'
  • j sounds like the 's' in measure: Joana
  • In Portugal, s at the end of a word often sounds like 'sh': dois (two), três (three)

To spell a word, say each letter. On forms, nome próprio means first name and apelido means last name.

  • Como se escreve? How do you spell it? (literally: How is it written?)
  • Pode soletrar, por favor? Can you spell it, please?
  • Escreve-se J, O, A, N, A.It's spelled J, O, A, N, A.

    显示答案

pão and mãe. The til (~) makes the vowel nasal.

Unit 2: Hello and goodbye

Portuguese greetings change with the time of day. Say bom dia in the morning, until lunch. Say boa tarde from lunch until it gets dark. Boa noite is for the evening and the night. It means both 'good evening' and 'good night'. Olá (hello) works at any time.

  • Olá!Hello! / Hi!
  • Bom dia.Good morning.
  • Boa tarde.Good afternoon.
  • Boa noite.Good evening. / Good night.
  • Como está?How are you? (polite)
  • Como estás?How are you? (informal)
  • Tudo bem? How's it going? / All good?
  • Estou bem, obrigado.I'm fine, thank you. (said by a man)
  • Estou bem, obrigada.I'm fine, thank you. (said by a woman)

Tu or o senhor / a senhora?

Use tu with friends, family, children and young people. To be polite with adults you do not know, say o senhor (to a man) or a senhora (to a woman), with the same verb form as he or she. Very often people just leave out the word for 'you': Como está? Você also exists, but in Portugal it can sound too direct, so it is better to avoid it at first.

Informal (tu)PoliteMeaning
Como estás?Como está?How are you?
Como te chamas?Como se chama? What's your name?
E tu?E o senhor? / E a senhora?And you?

Obrigado and obrigada agree with the person who speaks, not with the person you thank. A man says obrigado. A woman says obrigada.

  • Chamo-me Pedro.My name is Pedro.
  • Muito prazer.Nice to meet you.
  • Igualmente.Likewise. / You too.
  • Este é o meu amigo Rui.This is my friend Rui.
  • Esta é a minha colega Ana.This is my colleague Ana.

Portuguese英语
eu souI am
tu ésyou are (informal)
ele / ela éhe / she is
o senhor / a senhora éyou are (polite)
nós somoswe are
vocês sãoyou are (more than one person)
eles / elas sãothey are

Nationalities agree with the person. Many end in -o for a man and -a for a woman. Others end in a consonant for a man and add -a for a woman. A few are different: alemão (man), alemã (woman). Nationalities and languages start with a small letter.

CountryManWoman
o Canadácanadianocanadiana
os Estados Unidosamericanoamericana
葡萄牙portuguêsportuguesa
o Brasilbrasileirobrasileira
a Inglaterrainglêsinglesa
a Alemanhaalemãoalemã
a Espanhaespanholespanhola

To say where you are from, use sou de. De joins the article: de + o = do (do Canadá, do Brasil), de + a = da (da Alemanha), de + os = dos (dos Estados Unidos). Portugal and most cities have no article: Sou de Portugal. Sou de Toronto. Porto is different: it has o, so Sou do Porto and Moro no Porto (em + o = no). To say where you live, use moro em: Moro em Lisboa.

  • Sou canadiano.I'm Canadian. (man)
  • Sou canadiana.I'm Canadian. (woman)

For your age, use ter (to have), not ser: Tenho vinte e cinco anos (I am 25). Ter: eu tenho, tu tens, ele / ela tem. Phone numbers are usually said one digit at a time or in groups. A mobile phone is o telemóvel in Portugal (o celular in Brazil).

Unit 5: Days and dates

In Portuguese, days and months start with a small letter. Five days end in -feira. In everyday speech, people often drop it: segunda, terça, quarta, quinta, sexta. A good trick: count from Sunday. Segunda is day 2 (Monday), terça is day 3, and so on.

Portuguese英语

  • março (March)

  • maio (May)
  • junho (June)
  • julho (July)
  • agosto (August)
  • setembro (September)
  • outubro (October)
  • novembro (November)
  • dezembro (December)

To say a date, use the number + de + the month: 15 de março (15 March). Ask Que dia é hoje? and answer Hoje é dia 15. For your birthday, people in Portugal say Faço anos a 12 de maio (My birthday is on 12 May).

Days with -feira are feminine, so 'on Monday' is na segunda-feira. Sábado and domingo are masculine: no sábado, no domingo. For 'every Monday', use the plural: às segundas-feiras, aos sábados.

Ordinal numbers agree with the noun: primeiro / primeira (1st), segundo / segunda (2nd), terceiro / terceira (3rd), quarto / quarta (4th), quinto / quinta (5th). Examples: o segundo andar (the second floor), a primeira semana (the first week).

  • Que dia é hoje? What's the date today?

Unit 6: Telling the time

To ask the time, say Que horas são? For one o'clock, midday and midnight, the answer starts with é. For all other hours, it starts with são, because the hours are plural.

PortugueseTime
É uma hora.1:00
São duas horas.2:00
São três e um quarto.3:15
São quatro e meia.4:30
São cinco menos um quarto.4:45
São seis e dez.6:10
São oito menos dez.7:50
É meio-dia.12:00 noon
É meia-noite.12:00 midnight

E means 'and' (minutes after the hour) and menos means 'minus' (minutes before the hour). Meia (half) is feminine because it means meia hora, half an hour.

To say at what time something happens, use à for one o'clock and às for the other hours: A aula começa às nove. O almoço é à uma. Ask with A que horas…?

Signs and timetables use the 24-hour clock: 9h00, 14h30, 19h30. You can read 14h30 as catorze e trinta. In speech, people also say duas e meia da tarde. Use da manhã (in the morning), da tarde (in the afternoon) and da noite (in the evening or at night). On shop signs, aberto means open, and fechado or encerrado means closed.

  • Que horas são?What time is it?
  • É uma hora.It's one o'clock.
