Hotel Housekeeping Course (Room Attendant) (US) 2026

This course is for room attendants and housekeepers starting work in US hotels and motels. It covers servicing rooms in a safe order, chemicals under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, bloodborne pathogens basics, body mechanics, sharps, state and city panic button laws, guest privacy and signs of human trafficking. Your employer must train you on the chemicals you use, and some states and cities require more training; this course is background knowledge only and does not replace that training. Each of the five topics has a lesson and an untimed quiz, followed by a timed 30-question final assessment; score 80% or more to earn a Certificate of Completion.

Topic quiz 1: Servicing a guest room from door to door

  1. Question 1 of 16

What is the main purpose of a hotel room attendant's work?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Turning each room into a clean, safe space that meets the hotel's standard

Room attendants service guest rooms to the property's standard; sales, laundry and billing are other jobs.

  2. Question 2 of 16

On a room board, what does "C/O" or "DEP" usually mean?
    Show answer

Answer: A. The guest has checked out or is leaving today

A checkout or departure room needs complete service before the next guest arrives.

  3. Question 3 of 16

What kind of service does a stayover (S/O) room usually get?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Light service: tidy, empty trash and refresh what the guest wants

A stayover guest is still using the room, so you refresh it rather than doing a full checkout clean.

  4. Question 4 of 16

A room is marked VCI (vacant clean inspected). What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: D. Leave it alone, since it is ready for an arriving guest

VCI rooms have been cleaned and approved, so they should not be disturbed.

  5. Question 5 of 16

Why does a room marked "rush" usually go first?
    Show answer

Answer: C. The front desk needs it soon for an arriving guest

Rush or early check-in rooms are wanted soon, so they jump to the top of the list.

  6. Question 6 of 16

What is the correct way to enter a guest room?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Knock and announce "Housekeeping" twice, then open slightly and announce again

Knocking and announcing twice, then announcing again as you open the door, protects guest privacy and your safety.

  7. Question 7 of 16

You open the door and the guest is at the desk. What do you do?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Apologize, ask what time would suit them, and step out

When a guest is present, politely offer to return at a better time.

  8. Question 8 of 16

Why do many hotels want the cart placed across the open doorway during service?
    Show answer

Answer: C. It acts as a barrier so no one can slip into the room

A cart across the entrance blocks access while you work inside.

  9. Question 9 of 16

Why should you look before reaching into bedding or bins?
    Show answer

Answer: A. Needles and broken glass can be hidden there

Looking first protects you from sharps hidden in linens and trash.

  10. Question 10 of 16

Why is dusting done from top to bottom?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Debris drops onto spots you have not wiped yet

Working top to bottom means you do not have to clean lower surfaces twice.

  11. Question 11 of 16

In what order should you clean the bathroom?
    Show answer

Answer: A. From the least soiled surfaces to the most soiled, finishing with the toilet

Finishing with the toilet keeps germs from spreading to cleaner surfaces.

  12. Question 12 of 16

Where do you start vacuuming a guest room?
    Show answer

Answer: B. At the far wall, backing out toward the door

Backing out toward the door means you do not walk over finished carpet.

  13. Question 13 of 16

What is the point of color-coded cloths?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Keeping toilet germs away from sinks, counters and cups

Using one color only for toilets stops cross-contamination to surfaces guests touch with hands or mouths.

  14. Question 14 of 16

A guest's coffee mugs are dirty. What is the right step?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Replace them with clean, sanitized mugs as your hotel directs

Never rinse cups in the guest sink; swap them for properly cleaned ones.

  15. Question 15 of 16

Where should you check before releasing a checkout room?
    Show answer

Answer: C. Under the bed and pillows, in drawers and the closet, behind the door and in the safe

Guests often forget items in hidden spots, so check them all.

  16. Question 16 of 16

The faucet in a checkout room drips steadily. What should you do?
    Show answer

Answer: B. Report it through a work order or to your supervisor

Report maintenance problems, and do not release a room with a safety problem.

What to know before the test

  • OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires safety data sheets to be readily accessible to employees during each work shift.
  • A spray bottle filled from a labeled container may go unlabeled only if it is for the immediate use of the employee who filled it.
  • In a 1992 letter, OSHA said housekeepers outside health care are generally not considered to have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, but employers must assess actual tasks.
  • Workers covered by the bloodborne pathogens standard must be offered the hepatitis B vaccine at no cost within 10 working days of initial assignment.
  • Washington State requires hotels and motels to give a panic button to each housekeeper or room service attendant who works alone most of the time or without a coworker present.
  • California's Title 8, section 3345 requires lodging employers to have a written musculoskeletal injury prevention program for hotel housekeepers.
  • ICE advises the public never to try to confront or apprehend a suspected human trafficker, and to report what they know instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an OSHA card or an official housekeeping certification?

No. When you pass the final assessment you get a PassEveryTest Certificate of Completion, which shows you finished this general skills course. It is not an OSHA Outreach card, a HazCom or bloodborne pathogens training record, or any employer or government certification.

Do I need a license to work as a hotel housekeeper?

No license is needed for the job. But your employer must train you on the hazardous chemicals you use under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, and some places require more: for example, California requires housekeeping injury prevention training, and Washington State requires panic buttons for housekeepers who work alone.

Does every hotel have to give housekeepers panic buttons?

No. There is no single federal rule. Some states and cities require them, such as Washington State and the city of Seattle, and many hotel brands provide them by policy. Ask your employer what applies where you work.

What should I do if I think a guest is a trafficking victim?

Do not confront anyone or let the person know you are worried. Report what you saw to your supervisor or security. Call 911 if someone is in immediate danger, or contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-373-7888, or text 233733) or the HSI tip line (1-866-347-2423).

How does the final assessment work?

It has 30 questions drawn at random from the course question bank, with a 40-minute time limit. You need 80% to pass, and each attempt gives you a new mix of questions.

Is the certificate accredited or officially recognised?

No. It is a private certificate of completion for knowledge only. It is not recognised, accredited or approved by any government, licensing body, regulator or educational institution, and it does not replace any licence, certification or training required by law.
