Unit 1: Sounds and letters

Spanish uses the same letters as English, plus one more: ñ. The alphabet has 27 letters. Spanish spelling is very regular, so you can read most words aloud.

Letters to learn first

LetterSpanish nameHow it sounds in words
HhacheAlways silent: hola sounds like 'ola'.
JjotaA strong h from the throat: jamón.
ÑeñeLike 'ny' in 'canyon': España.
LL(doble ele)Like 'y' in 'yes': llamo.
GgeBefore e or i, like j: gente.
CceBefore e or i, like 'th' in Spain: cinco.
ZzetaLike 'th' in 'think' in Spain: zapato.
VuveSounds the same as b: vino.
RerreA quick tap: pero. RR, and r at the start of a word, are rolled: perro, Roma.
QcuAlways written qu; the u is silent: queso.

Accents and question marks

A written accent (la tilde) shows which part of the word is strong: café, adiós, teléfono. Always learn a word with its accent. To spell an accent, say the letter and then con tilde: á is 'a con tilde'. Questions and exclamations start with an upside-down mark: ¿Cómo te llamas? ¡Hola!

Most people in Spain have two last names (apellidos), one from each parent. On a form, nombre means first name and apellidos means last names. Because b and v sound the same, people often ask: ¿Con be o con uve?

  • ¿Cómo se escribe? How do you spell it?
  • Se escribe M, U, Ñ, O, Z.It's spelled M, U, Ñ, O, Z.
  • ¿Puede deletrearlo, por favor? Can you spell it, please?
  • ¿Con be o con uve?With a B or with a V?
  • Repita, por favor.Please repeat.
  • Me llamo Lucía.My name is Lucía.

  3. How do you say the h in 'hotel'?

    Toon antwoord

You don't say it. In Spanish, h is silent: 'otel'.

Unit 2: Hello and goodbye

Spanish has a different greeting for each part of the day. Hola (hello) works at any time and with anyone. In Spain, tardes (afternoon) lasts until about dinner time, which is often late.

  • Hola.Hello. / Hi.
  • Buenos días.Good morning (until lunch).
  • Buenas tardes.Good afternoon / good evening.
  • Buenas noches.Good evening (late) / good night.
  • ¿Qué tal?How are things? (informal)
  • Bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?Fine, thanks. And you?
  • Adiós.Goodbye.
  • Hasta luego.See you later. (a very common goodbye)
  • Hasta mañana.See you tomorrow.

Tú or usted?

  • Use tú with friends, family, children, classmates and other young people. People in Spain use tú a lot, even at work.
  • Use usted with an older person you do not know, an official, or in a formal shop or office.
  • Usted uses the same verb form as he or she: ¿Cómo está usted? (formal) but ¿Cómo estás? (informal).
  • For two or more people, Spain uses vosotros (informal) and ustedes (formal). In Latin America, people use ustedes for both.
Informal (tú)Formal (usted)Meaning
¿Cómo estás?¿Cómo está usted?How are you?
¿Cómo te llamas?¿Cómo se llama usted? What is your name?
Te presento a Ana.Le presento a la señora Gómez.Let me introduce Ana / Mrs. Gómez.

  3. You are a woman. Someone says: Mucho gusto. Answer.

    Toon antwoord

Unit 3: About me

To talk about who you are and where you are from, Spanish uses the verb ser (to be). Learn all its forms, because you will use them every day.

PersonserExample
yo (I)soySoy canadiense.
tú (you, informal)eres¿Eres inglés?
él / ella / ustedesElla es de México.
nosotros / nosotras (we)somosSomos estudiantes.
vosotros / vosotras (you all, Spain)sois¿Sois españoles?
ellos / ellas / ustedessonSon de Lima.

Spanish often drops the word for I, you or we, because the verb already shows the person: Soy de Toronto (I am from Toronto). In Latin America, people use ustedes son instead of vosotros sois.

Nationalities

Many nationalities change for a man or a woman: -o becomes -a (mexicano, mexicana), and a final consonant adds -a (español, española; inglés, inglesa; alemán, alemana). Nationalities that end in -e stay the same: canadiense, estadounidense. Nationalities and languages are written with a small letter: Soy francesa. Hablo inglés. Country names have a capital: Francia, Canadá.

  • ¿Cómo te llamas?What's your name?
  • Me llamo John.My name is John.
  • ¿De dónde eres?Where are you from?

From 16 to 29, numbers are one word: dieciséis, veintitrés. Watch the accents: dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés, veintiséis. From 31 to 99, use three words with y (and): treinta y uno, cincuenta y siete, noventa y nueve. One hundred is cien.

Uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine noun: un euro, una casa, veintiún años, veintiuna personas.

Age and phone numbers

For age, Spanish uses tener (to have), not ser: Tengo treinta años (I am thirty). The forms are tengo (I have), tienes (you have) and tiene (he, she or usted has). Phone numbers in Spain have nine digits. People say them one digit at a time or in pairs. Listen carefully and write each number.

On Monday, on Mondays

Do not use a word for 'on' with days. Use el for one day and los for every week: El lunes tengo clase (This Monday I have class). Los lunes tengo clase (I have class on Mondays). Lunes to viernes have the same form in the plural: los martes, los viernes.

For dates, say el + number + de + month: el catorce de febrero (14 February). Write the date with the day first: 14/2 is 14 February. For the first day of a month, people in Spain usually say el uno: el uno de enero. In Latin America, el primero de enero is also common.

To put things in order, use ordinal words: primero (first), segundo (second), tercero (third), cuarto (fourth), quinto (fifth). You will see them for floors and streets: el segundo piso (the second floor).

  • ¿Qué día es hoy? What day is it today?
  • Hoy es martes.Today is Tuesday.

Add de la mañana (in the morning), de la tarde (in the afternoon or early evening) or de la noche (at night): Son las once de la mañana (11 a.m.). Signs, tickets and timetables often use the 24-hour clock: 14:00, 20:30. In everyday talk, people say las dos de la tarde.

At what time?

To say when something happens, use a la or a las: a la una, a las ocho. Ask with ¿A qué hora…? For opening hours, use de… a… (from… to…): de nueve a dos. Useful words: abre (opens), cierra (closes), abierto (open), cerrado (closed). In Spain, lunch is often around 2 p.m. and dinner around 9 p.m., and some small shops close for a few hours in the afternoon, so always check the hours.

My, your, his, her

Possessive words go before the noun. They change for the thing you have, not for the owner. Add -s for more than one thing: mi hermano, mis hermanos.

EngelsOne thingMore than one
mymimis
your (tú)tutus
his, her, its, your (usted), theirsusus
ournuestro / nuestranuestros / nuestras
your (vosotros, Spain)vuestro / vuestravuestros / vuestras

Su can mean his, her, your (formal) or their, so look at the context: Ana y su hermano = Ana and her brother. Tu without an accent means your; tú with an accent means you. To say how many, use tener: tengo (I have), tienes (you have), tiene (he or she has), tenemos (we have).

ManWomanMeaning
altoaltatall
bajobajashort
delgadodelgadathin

rubiorubiablond
morenomorenadark-haired
simpáticosimpáticafriendly, nice
tímidotímidashy
trabajadortrabajadorahard-working
jovenjovenyoung
amableamablekind
inteligenteinteligenteintelligent

Rules: -o changes to -a (alto, alta). Adjectives that end in -e or in most consonants stay the same (amable, joven). Adjectives in -or add -a (trabajadora). For the plural, add -s after a vowel (altos, amables) and -es after a consonant (jóvenes, trabajadores). Jóvenes needs an accent to keep the stress in the same place.

Use ser for what someone looks like or is like: Es alta. Es muy simpático. Use tener for hair and eyes: Tiene el pelo largo (long hair). Tiene los ojos azules (blue eyes). Pelo is masculine and ojos is masculine plural, so the adjectives are largo and azules. Mayor is a polite word for an older person: Mi vecino es mayor.

  • ¿Cómo es tu hermana? What is your sister like?
  • Es alta y morena.She's tall and dark-haired.
  • Tiene el pelo corto.He/She has short hair.

  • In Spain, el piso is a flat (apartment). In Latin America, people say el departamento or el apartamento.
  • El piso also means floor: vivo en el tercer piso (I live on the third floor).
  • In Latin America, the living room is often la sala instead of el salón.

There is, there are: hay

Hay means both 'there is' and 'there are'. It never changes: Hay una mesa. Hay dos sillas. Use hay with un, una, a number or no article: ¿Hay ascensor? (Is there an elevator?) To say 'there is no', put no before hay: No hay jardín.

To say where a specific thing is, use estar, not hay: El sofá está en el salón. ¿Dónde está el baño? Compare: Hay un baño (there is a bathroom) and El baño está allí (the bathroom is there).

Estar (to be) has these forms: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están. Use estar for where people and things are (Estoy en casa) and for how you feel: ¿Cómo estás? Estoy bien. Estoy cansado (I'm tired, a man) or Estoy cansada (a woman).

Useful words to describe a home: grande (big), pequeño (small), nuevo (new), antiguo (old), luminoso (bright).

Every noun is masculine or feminine. Most nouns in -o are masculine (el huevo) and most in -a are feminine (la manzana). Learn others with the article: el café, la leche. Agua is feminine, but it takes el because it starts with a stressed a: el agua fría.

Spanish has no word for 'some' with food you cannot count. Just use the noun: Como pan (I eat bread). Bebo agua (I drink water). ¿Quieres café? (Do you want some coffee?) But use el, la, los or las to talk about food in general after gustar: Me gusta el queso. With a plural, use gustan: Me gustan las naranjas.

Plurals: add -s after a vowel (huevos, manzanas) and -es after a consonant (panes). Some words lose their accent: el limón, los limones. A final z becomes c: el pez, los peces.

Unit 11: Shopping and prices

Spain uses the euro (€). One euro has 100 céntimos. Prices use a comma, not a point, and the € sign often comes after the number: 3,50 €. Say tres euros con cincuenta, or just tres cincuenta.

To ask a price, use cuesta for one thing and cuestan for more than one: ¿Cuánto cuesta esta camiseta? ¿Cuánto cuestan estos zapatos? For the total, ask ¿Cuánto es? The answer often starts with son: Son quince euros.

This and these

  • este (masculine): este jersey (this sweater)
  • esta (feminine): esta camiseta (this T-shirt)
  • estos (masculine plural): estos zapatos (these shoes)
  • estas (feminine plural): estas gafas (these glasses)

Sizes and paying

For clothes, the size is la talla (S, M, L, or numbers like 38 or 42). For shoes, it is el número. Try clothes on in el probador (the fitting room) and pay at la caja (the checkout). You can pay con tarjeta (by card) or en efectivo (in cash). The receipt is el tique, often written ticket. Las rebajas are the sales.

  • ¿Cuánto cuesta esta camiseta?How much is this T-shirt?
  • ¿Cuánto cuestan estos zapatos? How much are these shoes?
  • ¿Cuánto es todo? How much is it altogether?
  • Son veinte euros con cincuenta.That's €20.50.

  • Quería un café con leche, por favor.I'd like a coffee with milk, please.

For distance, say: Está a cinco minutos andando (It's five minutes on foot).
