  • Hazmat training has these parts: general awareness and familiarization, function-specific, safety, security awareness, and in-depth security training when a security plan is required.
  • New employees, or employees changing jobs, must finish training within 90 days. Until then they may do hazmat tasks only under the direct supervision of a trained employee.
  • Recurrent training is required at least once every three years, counted from the date of the most recent training.
  • The employer must test each hazmat employee by appropriate means, such as written, verbal or performance-based testing, even when an outside source does the training.
  • DOT does not pre-approve or certify most hazmat trainers or programs. The employer decides who is qualified to train.
  • Training records cover the preceding three years and are kept for 90 days after the employee leaves.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs DOT hazmat training?

Every hazmat employee: anyone whose work directly affects hazmat transport safety, such as people who load, unload, handle or prepare hazmat for shipment, sign shipping papers or drive vehicles carrying it. Self-employed owner-operators are included.

Is there an official DOT hazmat test?

No federal test or card. Your hazmat employer must test you by appropriate means, certify that you were trained and tested, and keep a record. Any pass mark is set by the employer.

How often is hazmat training required?

Within 90 days of starting a hazmat job or changing job functions, and then at least once every three years.

Does OSHA or a CDL hazmat endorsement count as DOT hazmat training?

Only partly. OSHA or EPA training counts only for the parts that match the DOT topics, and a CDL endorsement does not automatically cover every task. Your employer must fill any gaps.

Is this practice test official?

No. It is independent practice written from 49 CFR and PHMSA guidance. It is not connected to DOT, PHMSA or any employer.
