What to know before the test
- You can get a beginner's permit at 15. You take the knowledge test at any SCDMV branch, and no manuals or testing aids are allowed.
- You need 20/40 vision, corrected, in at least one eye.
- Hold the permit at least 180 days. Teens aged 15–16 need 40 practice hours, 10 at night, plus driver education.
- Conditional and special restricted drivers may drive alone only from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (8 p.m. in daylight saving time) and may carry no more than two passengers under 21.
- Drivers under 21 with a BAC of 0.02% or more are suspended immediately for at least three months.
- South Carolina's hands-free law began September 1, 2025, with warnings first and tickets from March 1, 2026.
