Switzerland Security Guard Knowledge Test 2026
Switzerland has no national security guard exam. Each canton, or a group of cantons, sets its own rules, and only some (such as Ticino) have a formal exam. This knowledge test covers the main cantonal systems, the training rules in the industry's collective agreement, and the federal laws every guard must know.
Quick answer
Pass mark: No single national exam. In the CES cantons, Zurich and Bern, the employer trains and tests staff. Ticino's CPSicur exam needs a grade of at least 4 (scale 1 to 6) in every subject. It is run by Cantonal police authorities (rules differ by canton; six French-speaking cantons share the CES concordat). Practise here for free with 60 questions, each with the answer and an explanation. Checked against official sources on October 11, 2026.

The real test: No single national exam. In the CES cantons, Zurich and Bern, the employer trains and tests staff. Ticino's CPSicur exam needs a grade of at least 4 (scale 1 to 6) in every subject.
What to know before the test
- Private security is regulated by the cantons. A 2010 concordat for German-speaking cantons (KÜPS) was suspended and never came into force.
- Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais and Vaud share the Concordat on security companies (CES). The employer applies for each agent's authorisation, which is valid for four years in all six cantons.
- Under the CES, agents get initial training in the first three months, repeat it at each four-year renewal, and have at least one training session a year, checked by written tests.
- In canton Zurich, every firm offering security services commercially needs a permit. The firm must train staff before deployment; the canton recommends the 20-hour basic training of the industry's collective agreement.
- In canton Bern, basic training must be finished within three months, and staff need at least 5 hours of refresher training each year.
- In Ticino, the CPSicur I course for security agents has 40 lessons of 45 minutes, with written, oral and practical exams. Every subject needs a grade of 4 or more.
- Under Article 218 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a private person may arrest someone caught committing a felony or misdemeanour if police cannot come in time, and must hand them to police as quickly as possible.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a national security guard licence in Switzerland?
No. Each canton sets its own rules. Six French-speaking cantons share one concordat, while cantons such as Zurich, Bern and Ticino have their own laws.
Is there an official written exam for security guards?
It depends on the canton. Ticino has the CPSicur exam. In the CES cantons, Zurich and Bern, the employer must train staff and, in the CES cantons, confirm training with written tests. This practice test is a knowledge check, not a copy of any official exam.
How many questions does the real test have?
There is no single official test, so there is no national question count or time limit. The mock exam here uses 40 questions and a 75% pass line as practice only.
Who applies for my security authorisation?
In the CES cantons, your employer applies for your agent card to the police of the canton where the firm is based. In Zurich and Bern, the company checks that you meet the personal requirements.
Can a security guard arrest someone in Switzerland?
Only like any private person: if police cannot come in time and the person was caught committing a felony or misdemeanour, or the public was asked to help find them. Force must be a proportionate last resort, and the person must be handed to police quickly.
How much training do new security guards get?
The industry's collective agreement sets at least 20 hours of basic training. Bern requires it within three months; Zurich requires training before deployment.
