What to know before the test
- The DGT theory test has 30 questions, each with three possible answers. At least one question is based on a short video of a risk situation, which you watch before you see the question.
- Because of the video question the test is taken on a computer. If your local exam point has no computer room, you can take the test at your provincial DGT office (Jefatura).
- One application fee covers two exam sittings. If you fail twice, in the same test or in different tests, you must apply again and pay a new fee.
- A test you have passed is kept for 2 years. If you do not get the licence in that time, you must take all the tests again.
- To apply you must live in Spain and have a medical fitness report from an authorised driver medical centre (CRC). The report is valid for 90 days.
- The minimum age for a B licence is 18. You can take your first exam up to 3 months before you reach that age.
- New drivers start with 8 points instead of 12, and for 2 years their alcohol limit is 0.3 g/l in blood (0.15 mg/l in breath).
- When you pass the last test you get a provisional licence that lets you drive in Spain for 3 months, until your card arrives. It is not valid abroad.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Spanish DGT theory test?
There are 30 questions, each with three possible answers and one correct. At least one question shows a video of a risk situation, such as a roundabout, merging or overtaking, before the question appears.
What is the pass mark and how long do I have?
The DGT pages we checked confirm 30 questions but do not state the pass mark or the time limit, and they say the time is extended to allow for the video. Our mock exam asks for 27 correct answers out of 30, a high target, and is not timed. Check the exact rules with your driving school or the DGT.
What happens if I fail the theory test?
One application fee covers two sittings. If you fail twice, you must make a new application and pay the fee again.
Can I learn to drive at 17 in Spain?
Not yet. A 2025 EU directive allows a B licence at 17 with an experienced companion, but Spain must first put it into national law, which it has until 26 November 2028. Until then the minimum age is 18.
Can I exchange my foreign licence instead of taking the test?
If you live in Spain and your licence comes from a country that has an exchange agreement with Spain, you can usually exchange it at the DGT. Your original licence is then withdrawn. If there is no agreement, you must take the Spanish tests.
What is the V-16 light I must carry?
Since 1 January 2026 a connected V-16 warning light is the only legal way to warn traffic that your car is stopped on the road. It flashes and sends its location to the DGT 3.0 platform. The DGT recommends putting it on the roof.
