What to know before the test
- The CCSE (knowledge of the Spanish Constitution and social and cultural reality) is written by the Instituto Cervantes. Passing it is one of the legal requirements for nationality by residence.
- The test has 25 questions in five tasks. Each is multiple choice with three options or true/false. You have 45 minutes.
- You pass with 15 correct answers (60%). Each correct answer is worth 1 point, and wrong or blank answers are not penalised.
- Since January 2026 all CCSE tests use the questions in the official CCSE 2026 manual, which is free to download with an audio version and a multilingual glossary.
- You must also pass a DELE Spanish exam at level A2 or higher, unless you are a national of a country or territory where Spanish is an official language.
- People who hold the Spanish ESO (compulsory secondary education) certificate are fully exempt from the CCSE. Candidates must be over 16 to register.
- The usual residence period is 10 years: 5 for refugees, 2 for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal, and 1 in some cases such as birth in Spain.
- After nationality is granted, you have 180 days to swear or promise loyalty to the King and obedience to the Constitution and the laws, and to register in the Civil Registry.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the CCSE and what is the pass mark?
There are 25 questions in five tasks. You need 15 correct answers, which is 60%. Wrong answers do not take points away, so answer every question.
How long is the CCSE exam?
45 minutes. Our mock exam uses the same 25 questions, 15-to-pass rule and 45-minute timer.
Can I take the CCSE in English?
No. The instructions and questions are in Spanish. The Instituto Cervantes publishes a free glossary with the key words in English and other languages, and an audio version of the 2026 questions.
Do I need the DELE A2 as well as the CCSE?
Yes, in most cases. Nationality by residence requires a DELE at level A2 or higher. Nationals of countries or territories where Spanish is an official language do not need the DELE, but they still take the CCSE unless they are exempt.
Are the real CCSE questions published?
Yes. Since January 2026 the test uses the questions in the official CCSE 2026 manual from the Instituto Cervantes. Our questions are original and in English, so study the official manual in Spanish too.
Who does not have to take the CCSE?
The Instituto Cervantes gives a full exemption to people with the Spanish ESO certificate. Candidates with a disability or learning difficulty can ask for special conditions at least two weeks before the test.
