Frequently asked questions
How many questions are in the German driving theory test?
30 questions for a first car licence. If you already hold another licence class, such as a motorcycle class, you get 20 questions.
What is the pass mark for the German theory test?
The test uses error points instead of a pass mark. Each question is worth 2 to 5 points, and you pass with 10 error points or fewer out of 110, unless you get two 5-point questions wrong. Our mock exam uses 27 correct out of 30 as a close equivalent.
How much time do you have for the theory test?
The regulation does not publish one fixed time limit. TÜV NORD says candidates usually have about 30 to 45 minutes. Our mock exam is untimed.
Can I take the German theory test in English?
Yes. English is one of 12 foreign languages allowed, along with French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish and Arabic.
Do I need a driving school to take the test?
Yes. You must complete the required training at a driving school (Fahrschule), which confirms your training and registers you for the test.
Is the German theory test changing?
A reform bill to shrink the question catalogue and simplify the scoring was being discussed in the Bundestag in autumn 2026. As of 11 October 2026 it was not yet law, so the current rules still apply.
