What to know before the test

  • The Outreach Training Program is voluntary and none of its courses is a certification. Some states, cities or employers require the card as a condition of employment.
  • The trainer or online provider issues the DOL card, not OSHA. Trainers have 90 days after the course to issue cards, and a card cannot be issued for a course finished more than 5 years ago.
  • The 10-hour General Industry course has 6 required hours: 1 hour each on Introduction to OSHA, walking and working surfaces, exit routes and fire protection, electrical, PPE and hazard communication.
  • The course also has 2 elective hours (at least two topics of 30 minutes or more, such as lockout/tagout or machine guarding) and 2 optional hours.
  • Outreach training is limited to 7.5 student contact hours per day, so a 10-hour class takes at least two days.
  • In general industry, workers on a walking-working surface 4 feet or more above a lower level must be protected from falls.
  • Employers must report a work-related death within 8 hours, and an in-patient hospitalization, amputation or loss of an eye within 24 hours.
