Lesson 1: How TCF Canada works
TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français) is a French test for adults. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) lists it as one of two approved French tests for Express Entry. The other is TEF Canada. For details about the test itself, IRCC's page links to France Éducation international, the organization that provides the TCF.
The four tests
| Test (épreuve) | Skill | Time | Questions or tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compréhension orale | Listening | 35 minutes | 39 questions |
| Compréhension écrite | Reading | 60 minutes | 39 questions |
| Expression orale | Speaking | 12 minutes | 3 subjects |
| Expression écrite | Writing | 60 minutes | 3 mandatory topics |
Compréhension means understanding, and expression means producing language. Orale is spoken and écrite is written. The four tests add up to 35 + 60 + 12 + 60 = 167 minutes, not counting check-in or breaks. The two comprehension tests have 39 + 39 = 78 questions.
Work out your pace. In listening, 35 minutes for 39 questions is about 54 seconds per question. In reading, 60 minutes for 39 questions is about 1 minute 32 seconds per question.
The TCF describes French on a 6-level scale that matches the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A1 (the lowest level) to C2 (the highest).
Scores and NCLC levels
IRCC uses the NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens), the French version of the Canadian Language Benchmarks. In IRCC's equivalency chart, TCF Canada reading and listening scores go up to 699, and writing and speaking scores go up to 20.
| NCLC | Reading | Listening | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 549–699 | 549–699 | 16–20 | 16–20 |
| 9 | 524–548 | 523–548 | 14–15 | 14–15 |
| 8 | 499–523 | 503–522 | 12–13 | 12–13 |
| 7 | 453–498 | 458–502 | 10–11 | 10–11 |
| 6 | 406–452 | 398–457 | 7–9 | 7–9 |
| 5 | 375–405 | 369–397 | 6 | 6 |
| 4 | 342–374 | 331–368 | 4–5 | 4–5 |
The reading and listening columns are not the same. A score of 500 is NCLC 7 in listening (458–502) but NCLC 8 in reading (499–523). Always read the column for the right skill.
Results and Express Entry
- For Express Entry, your results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent residence application.
- You enter your test results in your Express Entry profile. Each program sets its own minimum NCLC levels, so check IRCC's pages for your program.
- For citizenship, IRCC also accepts TCF Canada results as proof of French. Check IRCC's citizenship language-proof pages for the level you need.
About this course: practice scores here are feedback only. They are not an official TCF Canada result and not an NCLC level, and IRCC does not accept them. The final assessment has 35 questions in 40 minutes. Score 80% or more to get the certificate of completion.
Practical exercise: convert scores to NCLC levels
Use the NCLC table above to read these practice results for one candidate.
| Skill | Score |
|---|---|
| Listening | 510 |
| Reading | 452 |
| Writing | 14 |
| Speaking | 9 |
What NCLC level is the listening score?
Visa svar
NCLC 8. Listening NCLC 8 is 503–522, and 510 is in that range.
What NCLC level is the reading score?
Visa svar
NCLC 6. Reading NCLC 6 is 406–452, so 452 is the top of NCLC 6.
What NCLC levels are the writing and speaking scores?
Visa svar
Writing 14 is NCLC 9 (14–15). Speaking 9 is NCLC 6 (7–9).
How many more points would the candidate need in reading to reach NCLC 7?
Visa svar
Just 1 point. Reading NCLC 7 starts at 453, and 453 − 452 = 1.
Lesson 2: Compréhension orale (listening)
The listening test has 39 questions in 35 minutes. In this course, each listening question has a recording that your device reads aloud in a French (France) voice. Press play, listen, then answer. The script appears after you answer, so you can check what you missed.
Before you listen
Read the question first and decide what kind of information you need: a time, a place, a reason, a feeling or an opinion. If the question asks « why », listen for parce que, car or en raison de. If it asks what someone thinks, listen for opinion words.
Times, dates and changes
Announcements and timetables in French use the 24-hour clock: quatorze heures dix is 14 h 10 (2:10 p.m.). Many questions test a change to the plan, so listen to the end of the sentence. If a train « prévu à 14 h 10 » leaves « avec vingt minutes de retard », it leaves at 14 h 30.
| Word or phrase | What it changes |
|---|---|
| avec … de retard | later than planned: add the time |
| annulé | cancelled: it will not happen |
| déplacé à / reporté à | moved to another day or time |
| sauf / mais pas | except / but not |
| compris, charges comprises | included in the price |
| toutefois | however: a second piece of information follows |
| la deuxième proposition | the second option offered |
Everyday expressions
Spoken French uses short expressions that show feelings. Learn these:
| Expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pas mal, sans plus. | It was OK, but nothing special. |
| Bof. | Not enthusiastic; unsure. |
| Je comprends l'idée, mais… | A polite reservation: the speaker is not fully for it. |
| Permettez-moi d'en douter. | I doubt it (a sceptical attitude). |
| Encore faut-il que… | Only if…; it adds a condition. |
| Contrairement à une idée reçue… | Contrary to what many people think… |
| Je suis vraiment désolé(e). | An apology. |
| Je m'en occupe. | I'll take care of it. |
Purpose and attitude
Ask yourself why the person is speaking: to inform, invite, cancel, complain, apologize or give advice. In a phone message, the purpose is often in the first two sentences. For attitude, learn these adjectives: enthousiaste (very positive), sceptique (doubtful), indifférent (does not care), admiratif (full of admiration), inquiet (worried).
Practical exercise: catch the key information
Read this phone message as if you heard it, then answer. « Bonjour, ici le cabinet du docteur Roy. Votre rendez-vous du jeudi 9 à 10 h est reporté au vendredi 10, à la même heure. Merci d'apporter votre carte d'assurance maladie. Si cette date ne vous convient pas, rappelez-nous avant mercredi. »
When is the new appointment?
Visa svar
Friday the 10th at 10 h. « Reporté au vendredi 10, à la même heure » means moved to Friday at the same time (10 h).
Which word tells you the appointment has changed?
Visa svar
« Reporté » (postponed, moved to a later date).
What must the patient bring?
Visa svar
Their health insurance card (« carte d'assurance maladie »).
What should the patient do if Friday does not work?
Visa svar
Call the office back before Wednesday (« rappelez-nous avant mercredi »).
Lesson 3: Compréhension écrite (reading)
The reading test has 39 questions in 60 minutes, so you have about 1 minute 32 seconds per question. In this course, texts go from short signs and messages to opinion articles.
Short practical texts
For signs, ads, messages and notices, scan for days and hours, rules, exceptions and deadlines. Sometimes you must calculate: if a pool closes at 20 h and the « dernière entrée » is 30 minutes before closing, the last entry is 19 h 30. A loan of « trois semaines » is 21 days.
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| uniquement | only |
| exigé(e) / non exigé(e) | required / not required |
| apprécié(e) | welcome, a plus |
| obligatoire | required |
| la veille | the day before |
| sauf si | unless |
| à louer / meublé | for rent / furnished |
| temps partiel / temps plein | part-time / full-time |
| la gérance | the building management |
| prolonger un prêt | to extend a loan |
Connectors
| Link | Connectors |
|---|---|
| Contrast | mais, pourtant, cependant, toutefois, en revanche |
| Consequence | donc, c'est pourquoi, si bien que |
| Cause | parce que, car, faute de (for lack of) |
| Addition | de plus, en outre |
| Opposite of what you expect | loin de + infinitive (far from…) |
« Le musée est gratuit le premier dimanche. En revanche, les expositions temporaires restent payantes. » Here en revanche shows an opposition between free and paid.
Purpose and position
In a letter, the purpose is often in the first lines: « Je me permets de vous écrire au sujet de… » gives the subject, and « Je vous serais reconnaissant de bien vouloir… » is a polite request. In an article, look for words that show change over time (d'abord… aujourd'hui) or a feeling such as la méfiance (distrust).
Opinion texts use set phrases. « On aurait tort de… » means it would be wrong to… . « Encore faut-il que… » adds a condition. « Au lieu de les mépriser » means instead of looking down on them.
Expressions, irony and careful claims
| Expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| mettre en veilleuse | to put on hold for a while |
| censé + infinitive | supposed to (often it did not happen) |
| peiner à | to struggle to |
| il s'agit d'une corrélation | two things happen together; this is not proof of a cause |
| rien ne prouve que | nothing proves that |
| dans bien des cas | in many cases |
Writers sometimes use irony: « Le nouveau règlement, censé simplifier les démarches, compte désormais quarante pages. » The writer means it did not simplify anything. Scientific texts are careful: a link between sport and sleep is not proof that sport causes better sleep.
Practical exercise: read a community notice
Read the notice, then answer. « CENTRE COMMUNAUTAIRE — Cours de cuisine pour adultes. Le jeudi de 18 h à 20 h, du 5 octobre au 30 novembre. Inscription obligatoire avant le 28 septembre, à l'accueil uniquement. Matériel fourni, sauf le tablier. Places limitées à douze personnes. »
On what day and at what time are the classes?
Visa svar
On Thursdays, from 18 h to 20 h.
Can you register by email?
Visa svar
No. Registration is « à l'accueil uniquement » (only at the front desk), and it must be done before September 28.
What must you bring?
Visa svar
An apron (« un tablier »). The material is provided « sauf le tablier » (except the apron).
Which word shows that you must register?
Visa svar
« Obligatoire » (required).
Lesson 4: Expression écrite (writing)
The writing test lasts 60 minutes and has 3 mandatory topics. This course does not reproduce the official task instructions or word limits, so read the official candidate information before your test. Here you practise three useful kinds of writing: a practical message, a formal email and an opinion text.
Formal or informal?
| Informal (friend, family) | Formal (landlord, company, person you do not know) | |
|---|---|---|
| Greeting | Salut Hugo, / Chère Léa, | Madame, Monsieur, / Madame la Directrice, |
| You | tu | vous |
| Request | Tu peux… ? | Je vous serais reconnaissant(e) de bien vouloir… |
| Closing | Bises, / À bientôt ! | Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, mes salutations distinguées. |
In a formal complaint, stay calm and precise. Write « Je constate que ma commande n'a toujours pas été livrée », not slang such as « c'est n'importe quoi ». Use the conditional to be polite: « Je voudrais savoir… », « Pourriez-vous… ? ».
Answer every point
If a task asks you to give the date, the time, the place and what to bring, all four must be in your text. Before you write, turn the task into a checklist. When you finish, tick each point.
Plan an opinion text
- Introduce the topic in one sentence.
- Give your opinion: « À mon avis… », « Je pense que… ».
- Give a first reason with an example: « D'abord… Par exemple… ».
- Add a second reason: « De plus… ».
- Conclude: « Pour conclure… » or « En conclusion… ».
Use connectors to show the logic: parce que or car for a cause, donc for a consequence, mais or pourtant for a contrast.
Grammar checklist
| Check | Example |
|---|---|
| Adjective agreement | Ma sœur est contente. Les cours sont ouverts. |
| Passé composé with être (aller, venir, partir…) | Hier, nous sommes allés au cinéma. |
| Reflexive verbs use être | Je me suis levée tôt. (not « je m'ai levé ») |
| Il faut que + subjunctive | Il faut que nous partions tôt. Il faut que tu finisses ce travail. |
| Bien que + subjunctive | Bien qu'il soit tard, elle continue. |
| Où for a place | C'est la ville où je suis né. |
| Dont with verbs that use de | Voici le livre dont je t'ai parlé. (parler de) |
Practical exercise: write an invitation to a friend
Task: invite your friend Hugo to a picnic. Give the date, the time, the place and what to bring. Then compare with the model answer.
Make a checklist from the task.
Visa svar
Date, time, place, what to bring. All four must appear, and the tone is informal (tu).
Write your message.
Visa svar
Model answer: « Salut Hugo, J'organise un pique-nique avec des amis dimanche prochain, à midi, au parc du Bord-de-l'Eau, près du grand lac. Est-ce que tu peux venir ? Si oui, apporte une boisson et une salade, s'il te plaît. Je m'occupe des sandwichs. Réponds-moi avant vendredi ! Bises, Camille »
A learner wrote: « Je organise un pique-nique. Mes amis est invités. » Correct the two mistakes.
Visa svar
« J'organise un pique-nique. » Before a vowel, je becomes j'. « Mes amis sont invités. » The verb agrees with the plural subject.
Practical exercise: write a formal email and an opinion paragraph
Two short tasks. Write your own answer first, then compare with the French model answers.
Task 1: Write to your landlord. The heating in your apartment has not worked for three days. Ask for a repair.
Visa svar
Model answer: « Madame, Monsieur, Je me permets de vous écrire au sujet du chauffage de mon appartement (no 12). Depuis trois jours, il ne fonctionne plus et il fait très froid. Je vous serais reconnaissant de bien vouloir envoyer un technicien le plus rapidement possible. Je suis disponible tous les jours après 17 h. Veuillez agréer, Madame, Monsieur, mes salutations distinguées. Karim Haddad »
Task 2: Give your opinion. « Faut-il travailler quatre jours par semaine ? »
Visa svar
In the opinion model, find one connector of addition, one of contrast and one of consequence.
Visa svar
Addition: « De plus ». Contrast: « Pourtant ». Consequence: « donc » (moins fatigués, donc plus efficaces).
Lesson 5: Expression orale (speaking)
The speaking test lasts 12 minutes and covers 3 subjects, with an examiner. Use vous with the examiner, because you do not know them and the situation is official. In a role-play where the examiner plays a friend, you can use tu.
Introduce yourself
Answer in full sentences, then add details: « Je m'appelle Ana et je viens du Brésil. J'habite à Calgary depuis deux ans. Je travaille comme infirmière. Le week-end, j'aime faire de la randonnée. » A one-word answer such as « Ana. » gives the examiner nothing to assess.
Ask questions in a role-play
| Way to ask | Example |
|---|---|
| Rising voice | Vous avez des cours le soir ? |
| Est-ce que + normal word order | Est-ce que les cours sont ouverts aux débutants ? |
| Inversion with a hyphen | Proposez-vous des réductions pour les étudiants ? |
Do not mix two forms: « Est-ce que proposez-vous… » is wrong. Useful questions: « Quels sont vos horaires d'ouverture ? » (opening hours), « Combien coûte l'abonnement ? », « Est-il possible de payer par carte ? ». To give advice, say « Je te conseille de… » or « Je vous conseille de… » + infinitive.
Give and justify an opinion
A strong answer has an opinion, a reason and an example: « Oui, c'est utile, parce que les enfants apprennent vite. Par exemple, ma fille parle déjà deux langues. » Organize longer answers with D'abord, De plus and Pour conclure.
Show nuance. « Il est vrai que la ville est chère. Néanmoins, il y a plus d'emplois. » admits a point and then gives a contrasting idea. « Je suis d'accord en partie, mais… » shows partial agreement.
Verb tenses you will need
- Past events: passé composé. « L'année dernière, je suis allé(e) en France. » (aller takes être)
- Hypothesis: si + imparfait, then the conditional. « Si j'avais plus de temps, j'apprendrais le piano. »
- Plans: aller + infinitive. « Je vais commencer un nouveau travail. »
When you have a problem
- You did not understand: « Pourriez-vous répéter la question, s'il vous plaît ? »
- You do not know a word: « Excusez-moi, que veut dire « colocation » ? »
- You need time to think: « Bonne question. Laissez-moi réfléchir un instant. »
Practical exercise: prepare a role-play and an opinion answer
Situation: you call a sports centre to get information before you join. Then answer an opinion question. Say your answers aloud, then compare with the French models.
Greet the person and say why you are calling.
Visa svar
Model: « Bonjour, madame. Je voudrais avoir des informations sur votre centre sportif, parce que je pense m'inscrire. »
Ask about opening hours and price, using two different question forms.
Visa svar
Model: « Quels sont vos horaires d'ouverture ? » and « Est-ce que l'abonnement mensuel coûte cher ? » (or « Proposez-vous des réductions pour les étudiants ? »).
End the call politely.
Visa svar
Model: « Merci beaucoup pour ces informations. Je vais réfléchir et je vous rappelle. Bonne journée ! »
Answer: « Préférez-vous vivre en ville ou à la campagne ? » Give an opinion, a reason, an example and a nuance.
Visa svar
Model: « Je préfère vivre en ville, parce que tout est proche. Par exemple, je vais au travail à pied. Il est vrai que la campagne est plus calme. Néanmoins, en ville, il y a plus d'emplois et d'activités. Pour conclure, la ville me convient mieux. »
