Nationalities

A nationality usually has a masculine and a feminine form. For a woman, add -e (some words also double the last letter: canadien, canadienne). Do not use a capital letter, and do not use un or une: Je suis canadien (a man), Je suis canadienne (a woman).

CountryManWoman

To say where you come from, use Je viens de. With a masculine country, de + le becomes du: Je viens du Canada. With a feminine country, use de: Je viens de France. Before a vowel, use d': Je viens d'Inde. Mais means 'but'.

From 70 to 99, French counts in twenties. 70 is 'sixty-ten' (soixante-dix), 80 is 'four twenties' (quatre-vingts) and 90 is 'four twenties ten' (quatre-vingt-dix). Use et with 21, 31, 41, 51, 61 and 71. In Belgium and Switzerland, people say septante (70) and nonante (90).

Age and phone numbers

To say your age, use avoir (to have), not être: J'ai 25 ans means 'I am 25'. Always add ans (years). In France, people say phone numbers in pairs: 06 12 34 56 78 is zéro six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit. You can always say each digit one by one. In Canada, people give the area code first, then the number in small groups: 514 555 0123.

Saying the date

Say le + number + month: le 14 juillet. For the first day of a month, use premier: le 1er mai is le premier mai. For all other days, use the normal number: le deux mars, le vingt et un juin. To add the day of the week, put it after le: le lundi 3 mars. For years, say the whole number: 1990 is mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix (1000 + 900 + 90) and 2026 is deux mille vingt-six.

Without le, a day means one day this week: Lundi, je travaille (this Monday). With le, it means every week: Je travaille le samedi (on Saturdays). Tous les samedis also means 'every Saturday'.

Other ordinal numbers end in -ième: deuxième (2nd), troisième (3rd), quatrième (4th). First is premier, or première before a feminine word.

  • Quel jour sommes-nous ?What day is it today?
  • Nous sommes mardi.It's Tuesday.
  • Quelle est la date aujourd'hui ?What is the date today?

Unit 6: Telling the time

3:15Il est trois heures et quart.
3:30Il est trois heures et demie.

4:10Il est quatre heures dix.
4:50Il est cinq heures moins dix.
12:00 (day)Il est midi.
12:00 (night)Il est minuit.

Schedules, stores and transport often use the 24-hour clock: 14 h 30 is quatorze heures trente (2:30 p.m.). With the 24-hour clock, just say the minutes as a number. French writes h, not a colon: 9 h 30.

At what time? Opening hours

Use à for 'at': à huit heures (at eight o'clock). For opening hours, use de … à … (from … to …): ouvert de 9 h à 17 h. Ouvert means open and fermé means closed.

  • Quelle heure est-il ?What time is it?
  • Il est midi.It's noon.
  • Il est sept heures et demie. It's 7:30.
  • À quelle heure ?At what time?

  • un sac — a bag
  • par carte — by card
  • comptant / en espèces — in cash

  • C'est combien ?How much is it?
