Unit 1: Sounds and letters

Polish uses the Latin alphabet with 32 letters. Nine of them have marks: ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź, ż. The letters q, v and x are only used in foreign words. The good news: Polish spelling is very regular, so when you know the sounds, you can read almost any word. Stress is almost always on the second-to-last syllable: *Warszawa* (var-SHA-va), *dziękuję* (jen-KOO-yeh).

Unit 2: Hello and goodbye

Polish has two ways to say “you”. With friends, family and children, use ty (informal). With adults you do not know, at work and in shops, use pan (to a man), pani (to a woman) or państwo (to a group). These words also mean “Mr”, “Mrs / Ms” and “ladies and gentlemen”. With pan and pani, the verb has the same form as for “he” or “she”: *Jak się pan ma?* (How are you, sir?)

  • Dzień dobry!Hello! / Good morning! (polite, all day)
  • Dobry wieczór!Good evening! (polite)
  • Cześć!Hi! / Bye! (informal)
  • Hej!Hi! (informal)
  • Do widzenia!Goodbye! (polite)
  • Na razie!Bye! (informal)
  • Do zobaczenia!See you!
  • Do jutra!See you tomorrow!
  • Dobranoc!Good night! (before bed)

Unit 3: About me

To say your name, use Nazywam się… (My name is…) or Mam na imię… (My first name is…). Polish often leaves out “I”, “you” and so on, because the verb ending shows the person: *Jestem z Kanady* means “I am from Canada”.

The verb być (to be)

oni / one (they)są

Where are you from?

After z (from), country names change their ending: *Polska → z Polski*, *Kanada → z Kanady*. Learn them as set phrases. After jestem / jest, a nationality word also changes: -em / -iem for men and -ą for women.

For languages, use po + a word ending in -u: *po polsku, po angielsku, po francusku, po niemiecku*. Trochę means “a little” and ale means “but”. After w (in), city names change too: *Warszawa → w Warszawie, Kraków → w Krakowie*.

  • Nazywam się Tom Smith. My name is Tom Smith.
  • Mam na imię Anna.My first name is Anna.
  • Skąd jesteś?Where are you from? (informal)

Your age: lat or lata?

To say your age, use mam (I have): *Mam trzydzieści lat* (I am 30). The word for “years” changes. Use lata after numbers that end in 2, 3 or 4, but not 12, 13 or 14: *dwa lata, dwadzieścia trzy lata*. Use lat after all other numbers: *pięć lat, dwanaście lat, dwadzieścia jeden lat*.

Unit 6: Telling the time

To ask the time, say Która (jest) godzina? The word *godzina* (hour) is feminine, so Polish uses feminine ordinal numbers for the hours: *Jest pierwsza* (It’s one o’clock), *Jest druga* (It’s two o’clock).

DuréeIt is…At…
1:00pierwszao pierwszej
2:00drugao drugiej

9:00dziewiątao dziewiątej
10:00dziesiątao dziesiątej
11:00jedenastao jedenastej
12:00dwunastao dwunastej

For minutes, just add the number: *Jest ósma piętnaście* (8:15), *Jest ósma trzydzieści* (8:30). To say at a time, use o and change the ending to -ej: *o ósmej* (at eight).

Timetables, signs and opening hours use the 24-hour clock: 13:00 *trzynasta*, 17:00 *siedemnasta*, 18:00 *osiemnasta*, 20:00 *dwudziesta*. From… to… is od… do… with the same -ej ending: *od dziewiątej do osiemnastej* (from 9:00 to 18:00).

Unit 7: Family

Polish nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter. The ending usually tells you: most masculine nouns end in a consonant (*brat*), most feminine nouns end in -a (*siostra*), and neuter nouns end in -o or -e (*dziecko*). Words for men are masculine even if they end in -a: *tata* (dad).

His is jego and her is jej. They never change: *jego siostra, jej brat*. For parents, say *moi rodzice*.

After mam (I have), feminine nouns change -a to -ę, and words for men add -a: *Mam siostrę. Mam brata.* After nie mam (I don’t have), use another form: *Nie mam dzieci.*

  • To jest moja rodzina. This is my family.
  • To jest mój mąż.This is my husband.
  • To jest moja żona. This is my wife.
  • Mam brata i siostrę.I have a brother and a sister.

Unit 8: Describing people

Polish adjectives change their ending to match the noun: -y or -i for masculine, -a for feminine and -e for neuter. *Mój brat jest wysoki. Moja siostra jest wysoka. Dziecko jest wesołe.* When you talk about yourself, use your own gender: a man says *Jestem zmęczony*, a woman says *Jestem zmęczona* (I’m tired).

To ask what someone is like, say Jaki on jest? (about a man) or Jaka ona jest? (about a woman). Make a word stronger with bardzo (very) or softer with trochę (a bit).

Hair and eyes

Use ma (he / she has): *Ma krótkie, ciemne włosy* (He / She has short, dark hair). *Ma niebieskie oczy* (He / She has blue eyes). *Włosy* (hair) and *oczy* (eyes) are plural in Polish, so the adjectives end in -e.

  • Jaki on jest? What is he like?
  • Jaka ona jest? What is she like?
  • Jest wysoki i szczupły.He is tall and slim.
  • Jest bardzo miła.She is very nice.
  • Ma długie włosy. He / She has long hair.

  3. Say “She has blue eyes.”

    Voir la réponse

Unit 9: Home

Mieszkanie is a flat (apartment) and dom is a house. For “there is”, Polish simply uses jest. For “there are”, use są: *W mieszkaniu jest balkon* (There is a balcony in the flat). *W pokoju są dwa okna* (There are two windows in the room).

There is no…

For “there is no…”, say nie ma and change the ending of the noun: *Nie ma balkonu* (There is no balcony). *Nie ma windy* (There is no elevator). Learn these forms as phrases for now.

Adjectives agree here too: *duży pokój* (a big room), *duża kuchnia*, *duże okno*. Mały means small. Tu means here and tam means there.

  • Gdzie jest łazienka?Where is the bathroom?
  • Moje mieszkanie ma trzy pokoje. My flat has three rooms.
  • W kuchni jest duża lodówka. There is a big fridge in the kitchen.

What to say

The operator asks Co się stało? (What happened?) and Gdzie pan jest? / Gdzie pani jest? (Where are you?). Give the street and the number: Jestem na ulicy Długiej 10. Speak slowly and do not hang up first.

Unit 29: Small talk

Small talk helps you make friends at work or school. In Poland, people often ask about the weekend, the weather or how things are going.

Starting a chat

Ask Co słychać? (What's new? How are things?) or Jak minął weekend? (How was your weekend?). Answer, then ask back with A u ciebie? (And you?). With people you call pan or pani, say A u pana? / A u pani?

The weather is always a safe topic: Ładna dziś pogoda, prawda? (Nice weather today, isn't it?) The word prawda? at the end works like isn't it? or right?

Compliments

Simple compliments: Ładna kurtka! (Nice jacket!), Ładnie wyglądasz! (You look nice!), Świetnie mówisz po polsku! (You speak Polish really well!). Answer with Dziękuję! Many Poles answer a compliment modestly, for example Dziękuję, ale jeszcze się uczę (Thanks, but I'm still learning).
