Belgium Driving Theory Test (Category B) 2026
Practise for the Belgian theory exam for a car licence (category B). Training and exams are run by each region, but the theory exam works the same way in Flanders and Wallonia: 50 questions, and you need 41 points out of 50, with 5 points lost for each serious error. These original questions in English cover Belgian rules, licence routes, speed limits and the road signs used across continental Europe.
Quick answer
The Belgian car theory exam (category B) has 50 questions. Pass mark: 41 points out of 50. Each light error costs 1 point and each serious error costs 5 points, so two serious errors mean a fail. It is run by The regions: exam centres in Flanders (GOCA Vlaanderen), Wallonia and the Brussels-Capital Region. Minimum age: 18 for a full category B licence; you can take the theory exam and start learning with a provisional licence from 17. Practise here for free with 250 questions, each with the answer and an explanation. Checked against official sources on October 11, 2026.

What to know before the test
- The theory exam has 50 questions. You start with 50 points and need at least 41. A light error costs 1 point and a serious error costs 5 points.
- An answer that would mean speeding, or a third- or fourth-degree offence such as running a red light, counts as a serious error. Two serious errors always mean a fail.
- Each question is read aloud and shown on screen, and you have at most 15 seconds to answer. The whole exam takes about 30 minutes.
- You can take the theory exam from 17. A pass is valid for 3 years. Retakes are unlimited, but after two failures you need at least 12 hours of theory lessons at a driving school.
- Driving exams are organised by the regions. In Brussels the Region runs the exam centres in Anderlecht and Schaerbeek.
- Since 1 January 2026 Wallonia requires the whole exam route, including the theory exam, to be done in Wallonia. From 1 January 2027 Flanders will only accept a theory pass from a Flemish centre for its practical exam.
- In Flanders the practical exam has two parts: a risk perception test and a road test of about 40 minutes. If you fail, you take both parts again.
- Since 1 July 2026 a new driver who commits a serious offence in the first 2 years loses the right to drive and must pass an exam again.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Belgian theory exam and what is the pass mark?
There are 50 questions and you need 41 points. A light error costs 1 point and a serious error costs 5, so you can make up to 9 light errors, or 1 serious and 4 light errors. Our mock exam uses 41 out of 50 but cannot tell light and serious errors apart, so aim well above the pass mark.
What is a serious error (faute grave / zware fout)?
It is a wrong answer that would lead to dangerous driving, such as going faster than the limit or committing a third- or fourth-degree offence like running a red light. Each serious error costs 5 points.
Is there a time limit?
There is no overall time limit, but each question is read aloud and you then have at most 15 seconds to answer. The exam takes about 30 minutes. Our mock exam is not timed, so practise answering quickly.
Can I take the Belgian theory exam in English?
In Flanders the exam is in Dutch, with paid audio translation into French, German or English. In Wallonia it is in French, in German at Eupen, and in English or Dutch only exceptionally, by appointment, at Couillet and Wandre. Ask the Brussels exam centres about their languages.
Is the driving licence different in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels?
The road rules and the licence are Belgian, but each region organises driving training and exams. Learning routes, rules for supervisors and some speed limits differ, so follow the rules of the region where you take your exams.
How old must I be to drive a car in Belgium?
You need to be 18 for a full category B licence. From 17 you can take the theory exam and, with a provisional licence and a supervisor, start learning on the road.
